Landing craft with fixed and retractable azimuthing drives

A marine vessel used for loading and offloading vehicles and cargo that has both excellent seakeeping and beaching properties. The vessel is provided with azimuthing or steerable thrusters below the waterline at the bow and stern of the ship, with the stern end thrusters being retractable into the hull during beaching operations. Because the vessel is beached "stern first" the bow may be designed with better wave breaking and seakeeping features than are on prior landing craft designs.

Road-towed heavy ferry

The road-towed heavy-load ferry may be produced in larger or smaller versions using the same design. Its basic embodiment can transport afloat loads exceeding 16 metric tons (17.6 tons) including its tow vehicle. The ferry essentially comprises three longitudinal hulls. Outboard hulls (12) pivot outward and inward to rest atop central hull (10). Thereby, the ferry is reduced to a width suitable for towing on public roads. Equipment for road towing includes telescoping towing tongue (32), and pneumatic-tired wheels (28) which remain intact afloat. Winch (40) enables kedging across shoal water or ground. The wheels extend below the deployed outboard hulls to assist in kedging by reducing friction, suction, and risk of hull damage. A water-ballast system counterbalances on-board loads and otherwise improves stability in adverse winds, waves, and currents. Hinged gunwales provide additional freeboard.

Low-fuel-consumption transport ship

Transport ships having a relatively large structure over the water line, such as a pure car carrier, container ship and a passenger ship tend to receive the air resistance during the sailing. When sailing aslant against the wind, check helm had to be effected so far to cancel the swinging moment causing an extra increase in the underwater resistance. A low-fuel-consumption transport ship described has a structure over the water line, including a bow of a shape integral with the bridge of a hollow nearly semispherical to quarter-spherical shape or a partly cylindrical shape which is smoothly continuing to the stern to decrease the air resistance. The low-fuel-consumption transport ship further has a vertical tail incorporating a chimney and is rotatable on the uppermost stern deck to cancel the swinging moment in the air, without almost requiring check helm and, therefore, decreasing the underwater resistance.

Multi-hull watercraft with amidships-mounted propellers

An efficient double-ended watercraft is disclosed that comprises four low-Froude number hulls: two forward, two aft, two on the port side, and two on the starboard. Each hull comprises an independent engine that drives a propeller shaft and propeller that is located amidships. The propeller shafts on the starboard are collinear, as are the propeller shafts on the port. The propellers on the starboard are near each other and counter rotate, as do the propellers on the port. The propellers are variable-pitch propellers. When the ferry is changes from moving forward to moving in reverse and from reverse to forward, the propellers on the starboard exchange pitch. This enables the ferry to move as efficiently in reverse as it does when forward. The propellers on the port also exchange pitch when changing from moving forward to moving in reverse and from reverse to forward.
