System and architecture for enterprise-scale, parallel data mining

A grid-based approach for enterprise-scale data mining that leverages database technology for I / O parallelism and on-demand compute servers for compute parallelism in the statistical computations is described. By enterprise-scale, we mean the highly-automated use of data mining in vertical business applications, where the data is stored on one or more relational database systems, and where a distributed architecture comprising of high-performance compute servers or a network of low-cost, commodity processors, is used to improve application performance, provide better quality data mining models, and for overall workload management. The approach relies on an algorithmic decomposition of the data mining kernel on the data and compute grids, which provides a simple way to exploit the parallelism on the respective grids, while minimizing the data transfer between them. The overall approach is compatible with existing standards for data mining task specification and results reporting in databases, and hence applications using these standards-based interfaces do not require any modification to realize the benefits of this grid-based approach.

High efficiency solar powered fan

Highly efficient ventilation fans for exhausting air out from underneath roofs, and / or for being portable in use and application. The fan can include optimized airflow blades having a twisted configuration that can move at a rotational speed operation of up to approximately 500 rpm. The approximately 15 inch diameter twisted blades can be premolded on a hub that together form a single molded unit of plastic. They can also be fabricated using metal. The unit can be mounted in an exhaust outlet having a conical diffuser on or adjacent to a roof. Alternatively, the fan can be portable for use most anywhere there is a need for ventilation and moving of air. The blades can rotate by a solar powered motor, where the blades and motor can generate up to approximately 1040 cfm while using no more than approximately 16 Watts.

Accommodating Intraocular Lens

An intraocular lens for insertion into a capsular bag of an eye comprises: an optic; and at least one plate haptic coupled to the optic by one or more flexible connecting members. The plate haptic with flexible finger extensions is designed to engage the periphery of the capsular bag. An increase in radial pressure upon constriction of the ciliary muscle causes the rigid posteriorly vaulted plate haptics to move centrally to further increase the vitreous cavity pressure with constriction of the ciliary muscle: the optic with its thin stretchable hinge across the connecting member is then displaced anteriorly along the axis of the eye. The haptic includes a longitudinally rigid frame to restrict deformation of the haptic in a longitudinal direction while permitting deformation in a transverse direction. Furthermore, the flexible connecting members include one or more hinged straps that extend radially and / or longitudinally from the optic. The optic can move forwards and backwards, relative to both the distal and proximal ends of the plate haptics, in response to ciliary muscle contraction and relaxation with an increase and decrease of vitreous cavity pressure. Finger-like projection extends from the plate haptic to engage the capsular bag to center and fixate the accommodating lens within the capsular bag.

An improved tool for locking a band clamp, and an improved lock for a band clamp is disclosed. The tool includes a knife body having a knife edge that progressively cuts the free end of the band over a period of time, rather than simultaneously cutting the entire band width. In one embodiment, this is accomplished with a knife edge that is non-linear. The tool further includes a punch with a rounded or hemispherical shaped leading tip that forms an improved locking dimple. The locking dimple forms an improved lock having side walls that are, at least in part, parallel with the walls of the surrounding aperture in the band. By varying the profile of the knife edge, the punch can more fully form an improved locking dimple.

Sheathless interface for capillary electrophoresis/electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry using an in-capillary electrode

A simple and rugged sheathless interface for capillary electrophoresis / electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (CE / ESI-MS) was designed using common laboratory tools and chemicals. The interface uses a small platinum (Pt) wire which is inserted into the CE capillary through a small hole near the terminus. The position of the wire inside the CE capillary and within the buffer solution is analogous to standard CE separation operations where the terminus of the CE capillary is placed inside a buffer reservoir along with a grounded platinum electrode. By combining the use of the in-capillary electrode interface with sharpening of the fused silica tip of the CE capillary outlet, a stable electrospray current was maintained for an extended period of time. The design was successfully applied to CE / ESI-MS separations and analysis of mixtures of peptides and proteins. A detection limit of approximately 4 femtomole (S / N=3) was achieved for detection of myoglobin utilizing a 75 mum-i.d. aminopropylsilane treated CE column and using a wide scan range of 550-1350 Da. The advantages of this new design include: (1) a stable CE and ESI current, (2) durability, (3) a reduced risk of sparking between the capillary tip and the inlet of the mass spectrometer, (4) lack of any dead volume, and (5) facile fabrication with common tools and chemicals.

Slide-out guide and carrier

A slide assembly is provided to couple a slide-out component disposed in an opening of a vehicle body to the vehicle body. The slide assembly includes a complementary contoured guide member, roller(s), and a support member, all generally enclosed by a mountable housing. The support member and roller(s) are coupled to roll along the guide member. In a particular embodiment, rollers are mounted in pairs on the top and bottom sides of the guide member. Due to the complementary contours of the roller and guide member, the slide assembly has a self-aligning characteristic. In one embodiment, the guide member includes a single portion that is horizontal with respect to the vehicle body, and only allows movement of the slide-out component in a horizontal direction. In another embodiment, the guide member includes multiple sections, each section having a portion that is horizontal with respect to the vehicle body and a portion that is inclined with respect to the vehicle body, thus allowing movement of the slide-out horizontally and vertically with respect to the vehicle body.

Gearless speed reducer or increaser

A gearless speed reducer or increaser consists of an input shaft, an output shaft, and a motor connected to the input shaft. There is an external race connected to one of the shafts, and an internal race attached to the other shaft. Two ball bearings are disposed between the races. After the ball bearings have been inserted, the shafts are tilted relative to each other so that the balls become fixed in pockets created between the races and cannot slide within the races. Rotating one of the shafts thus rotates the other shaft, since the balls do not slip but only rotate between the races. The system acts as a speed reducer or increaser due to the different diameters of the inner and outer races. The system can be uncoupled by pivoting the shafts back into alignment so that the balls can slide freely within the races.
