Gaseous fire suppression, also called clean agent fire suppression, is a term to describe the use of inert gases and chemical agents to extinguish a fire. These agents are governed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard for Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems – NFPA 2001 in the US, with different standards and regulations elsewhere. The system typically consists of the agent, agent storage containers, agent release valves, fire detectors, fire detection system (wiring control panel, actuation signaling), agent delivery piping, and agent dispersion nozzles. Less typically, the agent may be delivered by means of solid propellant gas generators that produce either inert or chemically active gas.

The system (20) includes a plurality of pressurized inert gas cylinders (24) each equipped with a valve unit (26); each valve unit (26) is in turn coupled via a conduit (28) to a delivery manifold (30). The respective valve units (26) are operable to deliver gas from the cylinders (24) at a generally constant pressure (usually around 10-100 bar) throughout a substantial portion of the time of gas delivery, to thereby provide effective hazard suppression without the need for expensive high-pressure gas handling and distribution hardware and a reduction in room venting area due to lower room over-pressurization. Each valve unit (26) has a valve body (48) and a shiftable piston-type sealing member (56). Gas pressure from the cylinder (24) and a spring assembly (184) biases the member 56 to the valve open position, this being counterbalanced by gas pressure within equalization and modulation chambers (180, 182) provided in the valve unit (26). When a hazard is detected, the valve units (26) are actuated by draining of gas from the modulation chambers (182), allowing gas flow from the cylinders (24). As gas discharge proceeds, gas flows into and out of the modulation chambers (182) so as to achieve the desired generally constant pressure gas output. Near the end of gas discharge, the spring assembly (184) becomes predominant and holds the valve unit (26) open until all gas is discharged.

The invention discloses a device for testing concentration of a gas extinguishing agent and a testing method of the device. The invention is characterized in that a gas filter, a heating and temperature control module, a flow control module, a concentration test module, a data processing module and a serial port communication module are assembled in a case body; a gas inlet is formed at the front end of the case body and a vacuum pump is connected to the rear end of the case body; the communication with a computer is achieved through a serial port; and the gas extinguishing agent concentration data is transferred to the computer after data processing. The gaseous mixture of air and gas extinguishing agent is pumped into the testing device through the vacuum pump, treated by the gas filter to remove foreign substances and heated to a preset temperature by a gas heater and then flows into the concentration test module; after the concentration data is obtained based on the thermal film sensing principle, the gaseous mixture is discharged through the outlet of the vacuum pump; the concentration data is processed by the data processing module to obtain concentration values of the gas extinguishing agent; and the concentration curve of the gas extinguishing agent is recorded by the computer. The device and method can be widely applied to test concentrations of different types of gas extinguishing agents and provide a support for evaluating fire extinguishment performance of gas extinguishing systems.
