The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for sterilizing containers with gas-phase hydrogen peroxide and heat on a linear form, fill and seal packaging machine. A partially formed container is subjected to multiple applications of gaseous hydrogen peroxide and hot air within a sterilization tunnel. The sterilization tunnel is maintained at a temperature greater than the condensation temperature of hydrogen peroxide. The present invention sterilizes the container allowing for filling of the container with a high acid product such as orange juice for ambient distribution. The container may be any number of possibilities such as TETRA REX TM gable top cartons, plastic bottles, and the like. The invention allows for the efficacious use of hydrogen peroxide gas having a concentration of up to 53%.

The present invention provides a multilayer plastic bottle comprising layers of PET and a polyamide such as, for example, MXD6, that is free from occurrence of delamination upon dropping or upon exposure to impact. The present inventors have found that when forming a barrier layer containing an adhesion promoting agent according to the present invention, an impact energy applied to the barrier layer is well reduced and the resultant multilayer bottle is improved in interlaminar bonding strength and prevented from suffering from delamination upon dropping, etc.

A seal coated plastic container for dispensing a pressurized product such as an aerosol or pressurized liquid, gel, or foam. The seal coating is applied to the exterior surface of the plastic container and effectively inhibits migration of non-liquefiable gas propellants and oxygen through the walls of the container. The plastic bottle is composed of a gas permeable polymeric material such as a polyolefin, polyester, or nylon or polycarbonate, and the seal coating is composed of at least one layer of a barrier material which has a low permeability to the non-liquefiable gas used as the propellant, i.e. the seal coating exhibits a high resistance to the passage of the non-liquefiable gas therethrough. The preferred polymeric material for the plastic bottle is polyethylene terephthalate, and the preferred seal coating is an epoxy-amine. The seal coating provides a coating of the barrier material that is about 0.005 to about 0.025 mm thick, but yet can greatly extend the shelf life of pressurized products such as an aerosol.
