Edge-lit electronic-ink display device for use in indoor and outdoor environments

A wireless electronic-ink based display device for use in indoor and outdoor environments characterized by low and / or dynamic ambient lighting conditions. The wireless electronic-ink based display device has an ambient light level sensor for sensing ambient lighting conditions about the wireless electronic-ink based display device, and generating a drive control signal in response to sensed ambient lighting conditions. The wireless electronic-ink based display device also has an edge-lit LED-based illumination module, responsive to the drive control signal generated by the ambient light level sensor, for illuminating the display surface of its addressable electronic-ink display module during low-illumination ambient lighting conditions detected by the ambient light level sensor, under the control of a processor. In the illustrative embodiment, the processor runs a firmware routine which analyzes detected ambient light conditions made by the ambient light level sensor, and automatically generates the drive control signal provided to the edge-lit LED illumination module.

Map structure and method for producing

A new and useful map structure, particularly for an activity within a special region having a geographic boundary, and a technique for creating a map structure are provided. The map and technique are particularly useful in providing a map for use by a hunter in a designated hunting region. The map structure comprises a substrate and map data produced on the substrate. The substrate is designed to withstand the conditions of the special region (e.g. an authorized hunting region), and of the type of handling it is likely to encounter in during the actively in the special region. The map data is also provided in a form that is likely to withstand the conditions of the special region, and is of a type that is particularly useful to the activity in the special region. Moreover, in producing the map structure, an electronic data file is created from which the map data can be produced on the substrate. The electronic data file is configured to produce map data that includes at a predetermined scale a boundary of a special geographic boundary of the special region in which a special outdoor activity, e.g. hunting, is authorized, and that map data includes information (e.g. water tank locations, GPS grid and coordinate information) that are particularly useful for the special outdoor activity.

User definable windows for selecting image processing regions

A system and methods for creating user definable windows for applying image processing, particularly useful in a post-production color correction equipment. The luminance values of a key image are captured in a key frame buffer. The key image is edited in a "paint" mode to enhance the luminance values or eliminate regions of the image, to define a region of interest. The key image is then converted to a 1-bit image. The 1-bit image is vectorized to derive a user defined window. The user defined window, comprising a closed polygon, is converted on a frame-by-frame basis to a bit map matte that is keyed with image processing such as color correction values. The user defined windows can be edited and stored and recalled for use in other frames. A user defined window for a first frame of a scene can be transformed or morphed into a user defined window for a final frame of a scene, with the system automatically interpolating between the beginning window and the ending window so that the window is automatically moved, resized, and changed in geometry during the succession of frames in a scene.

System and method for vehicle navigation using lateral offsets

A navigation system for use in a vehicle (402). The system includes an absolute position sensor, such as GPS, in addition to one or more additional sensors, such as a camera, laser scanner, or radar. The system further comprises a digital map or database that includes records for at least some of the vehicle's surrounding objects (400). These records can include relative positional attributes with respect to a reference axis (404). As the vehicle (402) moves, sensors sense the presence of at least some of these objects (400), and measure the vehicle's relative position to those objects. This information is used to determine the vehicle's instantaneous lateral offset (428) relative to the reference axis (404), and support features such as enhanced driving directions, collision avoidance, or automatic assisted driving. The system also allows new objects (408, 414) to be attributed using relative positioning, and thereby factored into the enhanced navigation features.

A probe control interface is provided for a structured light non-contact coordinate measuring machine probe. Portions of a video control signal for controlling the grey level of selected rows of pixels of a spatial light modulator of the probe can be decoded into control signals for additional probe components or functions that have been added to increase the measuring capabilities or versatility of the non-contact probe. By providing the additional probe component control signals in this manner, a versatile structured light non-contact probe system can be made compatible with a standard probe head autojoint system (e.g. a Renishaw™ type system), thus allowing the probe to be automatically exchanged with other standard probes and allowing existing systems to use the non-contact probe more easily. Various aspects of the probe control interface allow for relatively simple, compact, lightweight and robust implementation.

Dynamic thumbnails for document navigation

A “Spatial Navigator” provides a document navigation environment that leverages user spatial memory. Graphical thumbnail-type representations (“thumbnails”) provide scaled versions of entire documents. Changes to documents are immediately reflected in corresponding thumbnails. Similarly, document search results are highlighted in corresponding thumbnails. One or more dynamic document selection windows present arrangements of a plurality of these thumbnails for user selection and interaction. Each dynamic document selection window provides real-time inter-file navigation by allowing user selection and opening of documents, or any location or portion of a document, through user interaction with the corresponding thumbnail. Once a document is opened, intra-file navigation is enhanced by providing another scaled version of the entire document in a dynamic scrollbar adjacent to a primary document editing / viewing window. Selection of any point within this scrollbar-based thumbnail causes an immediate jump to the corresponding document location in the primary document editing / viewing window.

Dynamic off-track detector

A method and apparatus for dynamically detecting write fault errors is provided. According to the invention, transducer head control parameters are adjusted according to observed events. For instance, off-track events of a certain magnitude may trigger the implementation of a severe shock timer, which lengthens the delay between the off-track event and allowing write operations to resume, as compared to the standard off-track timer. According to another embodiment of the present invention, a lower write fault threshold is implemented following an off-track event of sufficient magnitude. According to yet another embodiment of the present invention, the average or accumulated position error of the transducer head is monitored, and a lower write fault threshold implemented if the average position error exceeds a threshold value. The present invention's provision of a method and apparatus that enables transducer head control parameters to be modified in response to observed off-track events allows the disk drive to provide high resistance to data loss without significant detrimental effects on the data throughput performance of the disk drive.
