Electronic compass system

An electronic compass system includes a magnetic sensor circuit having at least two sensing elements for sensing perpendicular components of the Earth's magnetic field vector. A processing circuit is coupled to the sensor circuit to filter, process, and compute a heading. The processing circuit may determine whether too much noise is present in the output signals received from said magnetic sensor circuit as a function of the relative strength of the Earth's magnetic field vector. The magnetic sensor circuit may include three magnetic field sensing elements contained in a common integrated package having a plurality of leads extending therefrom for mounting to a circuit board. The sensing elements need not be perpendicular to each other or parallel or perpendicular with the circuit board. The electronic compass system is particularly well suited for implementation in a vehicle rearview mirror assembly.

Implantable device for penetrating and delivering agents to cardiac tissue

An implantable devices for the effective elimination of an arrhythmogenic site from the myocardium is presented. By inserting small biocompatible conductors and / or insulators into the heart tissue at the arrhythmogenic site, it is possible to effectively eliminate a portion of the tissue from the electric field and current paths within the heart. The device would act as an alternative to the standard techniques for the removal of tissue from the effective contribution to the hearts electrical action which require the destruction of tissue via energy transfer (RF, microwave, cryogenic, etc.). This device is a significant improvement in the state of the art in that it does not require tissue necrosis. In one preferred embodiment the device is a non conductive helix that is permanently implanted into the heart wall around the arrhythmogenic site. In variations on the embodiment, the structure is wholly or partially conductive, the structure is used as an implantable substrate for anti arrhythmic, inflammatory, or angiogenic pharmacological agents, and the structure is deliverable by a catheter with a disengaging stylet. In other preferred embodiments that may incorporate the same variations, the device is a straight or curved stake, or a group of such stakes that are inserted simultaneously.

System and method for combined bioelectric sensing and biosensory feedback based adaptive therapy for medical disorders

A system and method for adaptive therapeutic intervention to effect real-time changes in the behavioral profile of an individual to facilitate the effectiveness of combined bioelectric sensing and biosensory based therapy for specific disorders. The system and method induces a temporary physiological state-of-mind (e.g., increased relaxation) to effect persistent changes to the cognitive-emotive profile of the individual (e.g., reduce internal tinnitus). The sense- and mental state-awareness responses, integrated into a two-way (i.e., bi-directional) feedback system using a dynamic interface with intelligently controlled thresholds. The invention takes into account details of multi-variate and nonlinear dynamics and database templates to more accurately compute the user's “state-of-mind.” It then utilizes this “state-of-mind” to drive therapeutic and non-therapeutic stimulus intervention. By way of a “combinatorial stimulation sequence” approach that uses customized sounds, the present invention creates a fine-tuned and well-controlled process. The significance of this interactivity is a prolonged change in the individual's cognitive-emotive profile.

System and method for promoting growth of multiple root systems in a hydroponic environment

This invention provides a container and associated growing process that promotes the growth of at least two different, specialized types of roots and that provides the optimal conditions for these two types of roots. In particular, the container defines an upper section that promotes growth of a fine intricate web of roots that is surrounded by an organic, non-organic or mixed organic and non-organic nutrient-rich medium. This upper section is separated by a permeable medium divider that allows predetermined quantities of water to pass into the upper section (to maintain desired moisture in the nutrient medium (soil), while a lower / bottom section contains a reservoir of hydroponic water that may be relatively free of any nutrients (e.g. “non-nutrient” water). Extending from the upper root ball are a series of water-drinking straw-like roots that transpire water directly from the non-nutrient reservoir and that are continually exposed to massive amounts of atmospheric oxygen. A transport (capillary) device allows water to wick from the reservoir into the upper section to maintain a desired level of moisture in the upper roots, and carrying with it additional dissolved oxygen via evaporation and transpiration. The bottom section can be filled with an acceptable porous, water-storing medium such as gravel or rock wool. The permeable medium divider can include one or more capillary devices that allow transfer of water from the lower reservoir into the upper section. In certain embodiments, the divider can include a series of formations that allow it to sit in an elevated manner on a water-containing structure (such as a sponge-like medium).

Imaging device and autofocusing method

In an imaging device according to one aspect of the invention, an amplitude demand Ac is specified according to a wobbling amplitude Ai required for detection of a hill-climbing direction based on an F value and a wobbling amplitude Ag required for detection of the hill-climbing direction based on an AGC gain. An allowable amplitude Am set for preventing a potential image shake caused by a magnification change with a position shift of a compensator lens in wobbling is specified corresponding to a zoom position and an object distance. When Ac>Am, the control procedure restricts the wobbling amplitude to Am and increases a sampling number of AF evaluation values to be detected at respective positions in wobbling, in order to ensure the sufficient detection performance of the hill-climbing direction. When Ac□Am on the other hand, the control procedure sets Ac to the wobbling amplitude. This arrangement of the imaging device efficiently ensures the sufficient detection performance of the hill-climbing direction for autofocusing control, while effectively preventing deterioration of the quality of a captured image due to the magnification change in the wobbling motion.
