Credit card system and method

A credit card system is provided which has the added feature of providing additional limited-use credit card numbers and / or cards. These numbers and / or cards can be used for a single transaction, thereby reducing the potential for fraudulent reuse of these numbers and / or cards. The credit card system finds application to “card remote” transactions such as by phone or Internet. Additionally, when a single use credit card is used for “card present” transactions, so called “skimming” fraud is eliminated. Various other features enhance the credit card system which will allow secure trade without the use of elaborate encryption techniques.

Method for applying a drug coating to a medical device

A method for coating a medical device with a drug is provided. Energy, preferably thermal energy, is applied to a crystalline deposit of a drug on the surface of a medical device to increase the molecular mobility and form a conformable drug coating with a low density of micro-cracks and other mechanical defects that can degrade the coating toughness and effective adhesion to the device surface. In a preferred embodiment, solution evaporation methods are used to deposit a crystalline coating of an anti-inflammatory steroid on a medical electrode. Heat applied at a controlled temperature, for a predetermined amount of time, induces a solid-state phase change of the drug coating providing a smooth, uniform, well-attached, conformable coating to form a layer that will elute from the electrode over time when implanted in a patient's body.

Software verification system, method and computer program element

A software security system is arranged to verify the authenticity of each element of a Java Virtual Machine installation. A digital signature is attached to each file of the JVM installation. A loader (20) verifies the digital signature of the JVM DLL (30). The JVM DLL 30 then verifies the digital signature of each other DLL and configuration file to be loaded (40, 50, 60, 70), and only loads those files which have successfully verified digital signatures. In this way the security of the JVM is enhanced, a user has greater confidence that the Java applications will function correctly, and the detection of incorrect or damaged JVM installations is improved.

Method and apparatus for combining images

An X-ray apparatus has a tube fitted out with an X-ray emitting focus that emits intensities of X-radiation crossing the object for a multiplicity of preliminarily determined main directions of emission, along a path. The apparatus shifts the X-ray tube along a path relative to the object. The apparatus has an X-ray detector that acquires a multiplicity of data of X-ray image data representing the multiplicity of main directions of emission. The apparatus distributes the preliminarily determined intensities of X-radiation non-uniformly on the multiplicity of main directions of emission. The apparatus also processes the multiplicity of data of X-ray image data in order to obtain both a 2D image and a 3D image of the object.

Method of biomedical signal analysis including improved automatic segmentation

A method of analysing biomedical signals, for example electrocardiograms, by using a Hidden Markov Model for subsections of the signal. In the case of an electrocardiogram two Hidden Markov Models are used to detect respectively the start and end of the QT interval. The relationship between the QT interval and heart rate can be computed and a contemporaneous value for the slope of this relationship can be obtained by calculating the QT / RR relationship for all of the beats in a sliding time window based on the current beat. Portions of electrocardiograms taken on different days can efficiently and accurately be compared by selecting time windows of the ECGs at the same time of day, and looking for similar beats in those time windows.

Selective operating system patching/updating

An application typically runs on top of an operating system. Some computing device have the ability to reboot and load a different operating system whenever an application or set of applications is run. If an old application requires an old operating system version, it is possible to load that OS instead. Every application can have its own version of the operating system. Only new applications or a small set of applications need to use the new OS—all the old applications may run their own older version of the OS. Patches or software updates can be applied only for particular applications. Other applications that need the same base OS but don't need the patch can skip using the patch. It is possible to determine what version the application is and selectively apply the patch based on the version of the application.
