Disk drive with controlled reduced internal pressure

A rigid magnetic recording disk drive includes a vacuum pump attached to the disk drive housing for removing air from within the housing so that the disk drive is operated at a reduced internal gas pressure. The pump motor is controlled by control circuitry that receives an input signal representative of the pressure within the housing to enable the pressure to be maintained within a predetermined reduced pressure range. Because spindle motor current has been directly correlated with internal pressure, a signal representative of the spindle motor current is used as the input to the pump control circuitry. The pump control circuitry also prevents the pump from turning on until the spindle motor has reached its stable operating speed, and from turning on when the disk drive is reading or writing data. Because of the reduced internal pressure the disk drive operates at a significantly higher disk RPM with only a minimal increase in power consumption and without any increase in track misregistration.

A novel disk drive includes an enclosure and a disk rotatably mounted to and within the enclosure. The disk drive enclosure has a fill port opening with an internally threaded section and an internal annular seating surface. A fill port valve is disposed within the fill port opening. The fill port valve includes an externally threaded section that is engaged with the internally threaded section of the fill port opening, an external annular seating surface in contact with and forming a continuous annular seal with the internal annular seating surface of the fill port opening, and a gas flow channel spanning the externally threaded section of the fill port valve. The disk drive may be helium-filled, and may also include a metal foil seal that is externally adhered to the disk drive enclosure and covers the fill port opening and the fill port valve.

The injection hole filter has a valve member configured to operate in an open state or closed state. The open state is a state while the helium gas is being injected and the closed state is a state after the helium gas has been finished to be injected. The valve member is in the open state if the outside pressure is higher than the inside pressure and is in the closed state if the inside pressure is higher than the outside pressure.

Cover plate for optical disk drive

A cover plate for an optical disk drive designed to reduce disk vibrations and noise is provided. The cover plate is installed above a main frame of the optical disk drive and has a through hole in the center through which a disk clamp for clamping a disk placed on a turntable is fitted and a projection formed to oppose the disk up to a predetermined height in order to narrow a gap with the disk. Furthermore, the cover plate has a circular step formed opposite a surface corresponding to an outer circumference of the disk in the shape of an annular groove for lowering acoustic energy density of noise. The cover plate constructed in this way reduces disk vibration due to air damping effects resulting from a narrow gap between the disk and the cover plate while suppressing noise due to the presence of the abruptly expanded portion. Furthermore, the cover plate can be implemented without a separate device by making simple changes to the structure of cover plate.

Hard disk drive

A hard disk drive is disclosed which is highly reliable against environmental changes. A breather hole is formed in an enclosure which houses therein a magnetic disk and a magnetic head. An opening / closing control mechanism is provided in the breather hole. The opening / closing control mechanism is made up of a valve member for opening and closing the breather hole, a lever which supports the valve member at a fulcrum, a spring which urges the valve member in a closing direction through the lever, and a solenoid which causes the valve member to be displaced in an opening direction against the biasing force of the spring. When the hard disk drive is not operating, the breather hole formed in the enclosure 1 is closed to seal the enclosure hermetically. The breather hole is opened only in an operating condition of the hard disk drive in which the internal temperature of the enclosure rises, thereby minimizing an environmental deterioration in the interior of the enclosure caused by moisture, gases and particles entering from the exterior and preventing a lowering of reliability caused by corrosion of the magnetic disk and the magnetic head.

Disk drive and breather filter having multiple ventilation paths and method of inspecting same

A disk drive has an internal breather filter that performs a filtration function while maintaining ventilation with an exterior of the drive. The filter circulates a gas between an interior and the exterior of its enclosure. The enclosure includes a first ventilation path for circulating the gas from the exterior to the filter, and a second ventilation path for circulating the gas from the filter to the exterior. In addition, a method of inspecting the filter and disk drive is disclosed. The method includes a compressing and decompressing step of compressing and decompressing the inside of the enclosure, a measuring step of measuring pressure in the enclosure, and a judging step of judging whether attachment of the filter is adequate on the basis of a value of the pressure measured.

Disk device

A HDD includes a disk unit, a circuit board and an air intake and exhaust mechanism. In the disk unit, a magnetic disk is rotatably provided. The circuit board is provided with a driving circuit including electronic components. The air intake and exhaust mechanism includes a bag provided between the disk unit and the circuit board. The bag includes a communication hole airtightly communicating with an air intake and exhaust hole provided in a housing of the disk unit, and air intake and exhaust valves are provided at the bag, and located apart from the communication hole. Due to this structure, when the internal air pressure of the disk unit changes, gas flows into and out from the gap between the disk unit and the bag through the communication hole, thus restricting changing of the air pressure.

The servo writer can write servo information onto a disk of a hard disk drive while the disk is within an inner chamber of a housing. The rotating disk creates a flow of fluid within the inner chamber. The disk is rotated during the servo writing process. The density of a fluid medium within the inner chamber is controlled by a medium control system so that the density of the medium is less than the density of air at one atmosphere. Lowering the density decreases the amplitude of vibrational forces created by the flow of fluid. Decreasing the amplitude reduces errors in the servo writing process. The density can be reduced by pulling a vacuum within the inner chamber. The density can also be reduced by filling the inner chamber with a gas such as helium that has a lower density than air.
