Spinal stabilization system to flexibly connect vertebrae

InactiveUS20050267470A1Preventing excessive motionPrecise alignmentInternal osteosythesisJoint implantsSpinal columnDeformity
A surgically implanted spinal stabilization system uses posterior anchor hooks attached to vertebrae to retain elastic bands to retain flexibility and mobility while maintaining alignment and preventing excessive motion and deformity. The elastic bands may parallel the longitudinal axis of the spine, or, for enhanced promotion of alignment, they may also arranged in a diagonally crossing configuration. Multi-level fixation can be achieved using the spinal stabilization system with longer elastic bands. A method of applying the spinal stabilization system using an elastic band application tool facilitates simple, rapid application of the system to a patient.

Implant delivery system with interlocked RX port orientation

A medical implant delivery system maintains an orientation between a guidewire lumen of an inner member of the system and a rapid-exchange port in an outer member. The medical device is disposed intermediate the inner and outer members and in friction or pressure-fit contact with the outer member. Once the guidewire lumen of the inner member and the rapid exchange port of the outer member are oriented, the friction or pressure-fit operates to maintain the orientation until deployment of the medical implant. Orientation is further maintained by a telescoping coupling of the guide wire lumen with the rapid exchange port.

Method and apparatus for aligning a mask with the visual axis of an eye

A method is provided for increasing the depth of focus of an eye of a patient. A visual axis of the eye is aligned with an instrument axis of an ophthalmic instrument. The ophthalmic instrument has an aperture through which the patient may look along the instrument axis. A first reference target is imaged on the instrument axis at a first distance with respect to the eye. A second reference target is imaged on the instrument axis with the ophthalmic instrument at a second distance with respect to the eye. The second distance is greater than the first distance. Movement is provided such that the patient's eye is in a position where the images of the first and second reference targets appear to the patient's eye to be aligned. A mask comprising a pin-hole aperture having a mask axis is aligned with the instrument axis such that the mask axis and the instrument axis are substantially collinear. The mask is applied to the eye of the patient while the alignment of the mask axis and the instrument axis is maintained. Maintaining alignment of the mask axis and the instrument axis may be facilitated by capturing an image of the eye.

Analyte monitoring system having back-up power source for use in either transport of the system or primary power loss

InactiveUS20090118604A1Maintain biasReduce and alleviate run-in time delayCatheterDiagnostic recording/measuringAnalyteStandby power
An analyte monitoring system includes a biosensor for detecting an analyte concentration in blood. The monitoring system includes first and second power sources, each selectively couplable to the biosensor for providing power to the biosensors. A sensor may be associated with the first power source and senses the output thereof. A selector is coupled to both the first and second power sources and the biosensor, such that it may selectively couple an output or outputs of either the first or second power sources to the biosensor. In operation, the first power source is coupled to the biosensor to thereby bias the sensor. If the sensor indicates that the first power source is not providing power to the biosensor, the selector decouples the first power source from the biosensor and couples the second power source to the biosensor to thereby maintain the biosensor in a biased state.

Suture securing device and method

The invention is directed to a device and method for securing a passed surgical suture in a manner similar to a tied knot. The suture securing device comprises a male piece having a top portion, a center shaft having one end connected to the top portion, and an end member having a capturing feature connected to another end of the center shaft; and a female piece having a top end and a bottom end comprising a column being generally cylindrical in shape and forming a hollow opening along its length, wherein the opening slidingly receives the center shaft and a suture to be captured and held by the capturing feature, the suture being secured in place between the column and the center shaft. The assembled male and female pieces are irreversibly interlocked and form a lightly compressed, convoluted or tortuous pathway. The capturing feature is formed to engage and obliquely capture the suture from different angles. The radii of the male and female pieces are preferably greater than the radius of the suture. The securing device may further comprise a link formed between the male and female pieces. The link may be a tether formed when the male and female pieces are formed. The link may be severed and removed after placement and assembling of the male and female pieces. In another aspect of the invention, a method for applying a suture securing device is disclosed comprising the steps of: (1) providing the suture securing device of the invention; (2) aligning the male piece and the female piece at a desired location for applying the suture securing device; and (3) pressing the center shaft of the male piece into the opening of the female piece. The method may further comprise the step of applying a compressive load on the male piece to dislodge an enlargement from an undercut of the female piece and to place the male piece and the female piece in a condition where they may be advanced to a desired position along the suture.

System and method for aligning an optic with an axis of an eye

A method increases the depth of focus of an eye having a line of sight. A pharmacologic agent is applied to the eye to cause a reduction in the size of the pupil of the eye. The pupil is aligned with a visible feature of a mask comprising a pin-hole aperture. The pin-hole aperture is centered on a mask axis. The alignment causes the mask axis to be substantially aligned with the line of sight of the eye. The mask is applied to the eye of the patient while maintaining the alignment of the visible feature of the mask and the pupil.

Corewire actuated delivery system with fixed distal stent-carrying extension

Medical device and methods for delivery or implantation of prostheses within hollow body organs and vessels or other luminal anatomy are disclosed. The subject technologies may be used in the treatment of atherosclerosis in stenting procedures. For such purposes, a self-expanding stent is deployed in connection with an angioplasty procedure with a corewire actuated delivery system having a fixed distal stent-carrying extension. Withdrawal of the corewire retracts a restraint freeing the stent from a collapsed state, whereupon the stent assumes an expanded configuration set in apposition to the interior surface of a vessel lumen in order to help maintain the vessel open.
