Call termination, also known as voice termination, refers to the routing of telephone calls from one telephone company, also known as a carrier or provider, to another. The terminating point is the called party or end point. The originating point is the calling party who initiates the call. This term often applies to calls while using voice over Internet protocol: a call initiated as a VoIP call is terminated using the public switched telephone network. In such cases, termination services may be sold as a separate commodity. The opposite of call termination is call origination, in which a call initiated from the PSTN is terminated using VoIP. Thus, in "origination" a call originates from PSTN and goes to VoIP, while in "termination" a call originates in VoIP and terminates to the PSTN. VoIP call termination is providing a path or route through which voice can be transmitted or sent over Internet. There are many providers which offer VoIP call termination services. For instance, a tier-1 operator registered and having a physical international network in the country has the right to originate and terminate a call using Internet telephony services.

The invention provides a way to fallback to a PSTN call at any time during a VoIP call when Quality of Service in a VoIP network falls below some acceptable level. The PSTN fallback calls can be retrieved “midcall” and rerouted back over the VoIP network. This provides optimal utilization of VoIP without sacrificing the quality of the call connection. Calls are cheaper because PSTN fallback calls are only established temporarily for the amount of time that the QoS problem exists on the VoIP network. Call fallback is conducted in a VoIP gateway by first receiving an incoming call. A Voice over IP (VoIP) call is established for the incoming call over the VoIP network. VoIP packets are encoded from the voice signals in the incoming call and sent over the VoIP network. Quality of service of the VoIP network is monitored during the VoIP call and a fallback call is setup over a PSTN network at any time during the VoIP call when the monitored quality of service of the VoIP network degrades. For a time the voice signals from the incoming call are cross connected to both the output for the fallback call and the output for the VoIP call. When a destination gateway starts receiving the voice signals from the fallback call, the VoIP call is dropped. The quality of service on the VoIP network continues to be monitored during the fallback call. A new VoIP call will be reestablished over the VoIP network during the fallback call when the quality of service of the VoIP network improves. Voice from the incoming call is for a time again cross connected to both the fallback call and the new VoIP call. After the destination gateway starts receiving audio packets again over the new VoIP call, the PSTN fallback call is terminated.

A radio terminal is disclosed which can be switched into a talking mode simply when a telephone call terminates while sound data of music or the like is being played back and besides can assure a good talking quality. A stereo headphone microphone unit connected to a portable telephone set body includes first and second earphones and a microphone disposed in the proximity of the second earphone. Except during telephone conversation, music played back by a music playback section is enjoyed using the earphones. If a termination detection section detects termination of a call, then if music is being played back, then the playback is stopped temporarily, and a first control section supplies a ringing tone only to the first earphone and enables telephone conversation by means of the first earphone and the microphone. When the telephone conversation comes to an end, playback of the music playback section is started from a portion of the music at which the playback was temporarily stopped. Playback of music by the music playback section is stopped if a battery remaining amount detection section detects that the remaining amount of the battery becomes lower than the lowest level with which telephone conversation is possible. During telephone conversation, no sound is outputted from the second earphone. Therefore, an echo can be prevented from being transmitted to the other party of telephone communication.

The mobile communication terminal includes a country code detecting unit for informing a country code for a corresponding country by detecting movement of a mobile communication terminal between countries. If the country code detecting unit provides an allowable country code according to the position of the mobile communication terminal, a control unit adds an international dialing code to preset information regarding a call terminating side so as to enable call connection. When the user registers a phone number of a communication counterpart in a phone directory, the user previously registers a country code for a country (in which the counterpart is located) and an area code in addition to the phone number of the counterpart as the information regarding the call terminating side. Accordingly, the user can call the counterpart positioned in another country without additionally inputting an international dialing code and a country code whenever the user originates a call.
