A method and system for estimating a 3D pose of an ultrasound probe based on acquired 2D ultrasound images. During surgery, the 3D probe pose is projected to a corresponding 2D location on the 2D laparoscopic image. An ultrasound probe is placed at / near a selected one of the 3D probe poses to acquire a 2D ultrasound image from which an anatomical structure (AS) is detected and used to generate an AS mask (ASM). The 3D probe pose of the ultrasound probe is estimated based on the ASM using an ASM pose mapping model and used to generate an optimal 3D probe pose estimate.
