An idle reduction vehicle has a relay in a power supply line from a battery to a starter motor. The relay is driven between a contact-side state, in which contacts short-circuit, and a resistor-side state, in which the contacts are opened and a resistor is serially inserted into the power supply line. At an engine restart from idle reduction, an ECU drives the relay to the resistor-side state and starts energization to the motor, thereby suppressing an inrush current. The ECU detects a contact-side state fixation abnormality of the relay based on a battery voltage at the time when the ECU drives the relay to the resistor-side state and energizes the motor. A system for automatically adjusting the temperature and carbon monoxide level in an occupied passenger compartment of a vehicle includes sensors for sensing carbon monoxide levels, temperature, and occupants in the passenger compartment. A controller receives input from the sensors, and activates an electric heater or an electric cooler to bring the temperatures within the passenger compartment within a predetermined temperature range if the temperature detected within the passenger compartment falls outside of the predetermined range of temperatures. The controller may automatically shut off the engine of the vehicle when the vehicle is in idle and the carbon monoxide level within the passenger compartment falls above a predetermined level, or if a transmission lever of the vehicle is placed in a park position. Method of utilizing multiple fuel injections to reduce engine emissions at idle

A method for operating an engine at idle that reduces NOx and controls smoke and hydrocarbon emissions. An idle delivery quantity of fuel is determined and divided into a first quantity of fuel and a second quantity of fuel in approximately equal quantities. During a compression stroke of an engine piston, the first quantity of fuel is injected into an engine cylinder. Adjusting at least one of timing and quantity of the injection of the first quantity of fuel reduces, at least in part, NOx emissions. At a timing angle of at least thirty degrees after the first quantity of fuel is injected and after the first quantity of fuel has been burned, there is an injection of the second quantity of fuel. Adjusting at least one of timing and quantity of the injection of the second quantity of fuel reduces, at least in part, smoke emissions.

The present concept is method of controlling a vehicle's engine idle and includes the steps of monitoring a vehicles operating parameters with a controller and comparing parameters to preselected shutdown conditions. In the event shutdown conditions are met and the key is not in the ignition, the controller warns operator of impending shutdown. The controller intercepts the ignition key signal and simulates the vehicle key to be in the run position such that vehicle functions are operable as if key is in run position. The controller shuts down engine. The method may also include the steps of: the controller intercepting the ignition key signal and simulating the vehicle key to be in the accessory position such that vehicle functions are operable as if key is in accessory position.
