An improved procedure for performing liposuction is obtained by utilizing a needle that includes a laser source conductor with one end of the needle being configured for insertion into a target adipose skin volume and the other end being coupled to a laser source. The needle may include one or more channels for extracting the treated adipose area. A vacuum source can be used in the extraction of the treated adipose. Further, the first end of the needle may include a cap or end-piece that reduces the build up of carbon deposits. An ultrasonically pulsating high-pressure fluid jet coupled with a suction system serve as a tissue harvesting device. Systems and methods for liposuction are disclosed that use a lipid-emulsifying fluid to produce fluid jet disruption and Venturi pumping of fat tissue. The device includes a flexible or rigid probe with an inlet lumen and an outlet lumen. The inlet lumen is in fluid communication with a pump capable of producing high pressures, e.g., 250-3500 psi. The pump is in fluid communication with a volume of a liquid such as sterile saline that may or may not contain a fat emulsifier. At the end of the inlet lumen is a conical constriction or a port that accelerates the emulsification fluid to high velocities. The high velocity jet stream creates a low pressure area that draws the fat tissue into proximity with the jet stream. The jet stream directly and through turbulent vortices breaks up the fat cells. The lipid of the fat cells is subsequently emulsified by the emulsification fluid.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for mechanically-assisted liposuction treatment. The apparatus includes a hand-holdable housing, an electro-cauterizing dual cannula assembly, and a reciprocation mechanism. The hand-holdable housing has a cavity adaptable for receipt of the electro-cauterizing cannula assembly. A liposuction cannula / suction tubing coupling is disclosed that enables the tubing to rotate freely about the juncture at which the tubing is coupled to the cannula. Such coupling may be formed as a separate fitting that is interconnected intermediate the liposuction cannula and the suction tubing, or integrally formed as part of the liposuction cannula, on one hand, or on the suction tubing, on the other hand.

A liposuction apparatus and method optionally having a sonic or ultrasonic source with an axial lumen passage in which the shaft can be made to reciprocate (oscillate) in a non-rectilinear fashion. An apparatus and method for simultaneously applying a compressive and a reciprocating force to underlying adipose cells from a location external to a patient's skin to rupture or otherwise remove the adipose cells within a subcutaneous tissue region. The adipose cells are ruptured through the mechanical application of compression and shearing forces. The patient's body then re-absorbs and expels the ruptured cells.
