Bluff body energy converter

A power generating system comprises a bluff (non-streamlined) body placed in a fluid stream at ninety degrees to the flow direction for creating a von Karman vortex street behind the body. In the process, feedback forces are generated that excite the bluff body into oscillation. The bluff body oscillatory movements are coupled to and energize a power generator. An impedance matching system is employed for electrically varying the natural frequency characteristics of the bluff body such that, over a relatively wide range of fluid flow velocities, the bluff body oscillates at a resonant frequency of the body for maximum energy transfer from the fluid stream to the bluff body.

Wind turbine maintenance optimizer

InactiveUS20140324495A1Optimise machine performanceFinancePlanned procedureTurbine
Determining when to perform preventative maintenance is an important consideration for maximizing the revenue of a wind turbine. For example, performing preventative maintenance may be cheaper than replacing turbine components when they fail. When determining to perform preventative maintenance, a maintenance scheduler may consider multiple factors. These factors may include the probability of failure, the predicted price of energy, predicted wind power production, resource constraints, and the like. Specifically, the maintenance scheduler may predict the future values of these factors which are then integrated into a net present value (NPV) for each of the components. Based on the respective NPVs, the maintenance scheduler may determine which maintenance actions to perform and in what order.

Fluid Powered Oscillator

A method and device for converting fluidic kinetic energy into oscillatory mechanical motion is disclosed. A mechanical structure of finite stiffness is coupled to a fluid-dynamical control surface the thrust from which is oscillated in direction. The coupling thereby induces oscillations in the structure, the magnitude of which can be controlled by the degree of mechanical resonance between the oscillation rate of the fluidic thrusting and the structure's resonance frequency. The resulting mechanical energy can be converted into electrical energy using either piezo-electric or electromagnetic means.

Oscillating foil propulsion system

The invention provides a propulsion system based on “thuniform” movement of a foil member to achieve desired directional movement of a vehicle such as an unmanned submarine type of vessel. A pair of foil members are mounted to the vehicle body for reciprocating oscillating movement towards and away from each other, creating forward movement due to the compression of a fluid medium between the foil members and the expulsion of the compressed fluid rearwardly of the foil members. Each foil member is mounted to a pivot shaft for limited rotational movement with respect to the vehicle body. Damping means are connected between each pivot shaft and its associated foil member so that during operation of the propulsion system damping torque will offset hydrodynamic loads imposed on the foil members by the fluid medium. The damping means will in turn control the pitch angle of the foil members during operation, meaning that a thrust is generated for rigid foil members when moving at zero forward speed. The propulsion system of the invention exhibits increased efficiency and thrust in comparison to other such propulsion systems. The foil members are mounted to the vehicle body in such a manner that the thrust vector thereof can be directed through a full 360 degrees relative to the vehicle, thereby achieving superb maneuverability when the vehicle is provided with sets of the thrusters suitable located thereon.

Method and apparatus for preventing deposits from forming in a turbomolecular pump having magnetic or gas bearings

In the invention, deposits that disturb electrical discharges between the rotor and the stator inside a turbomolecular pump with a plurality of stages on magnetic or gas bearings are prevented from forming by injecting an active gas at at least one suitable location inside the pump via at least one gas intake pipe, which active gas reacts with the deposit-generating molecules and forms gaseous compounds that are removed by the pump. Oscillating energy capture mechanism

Multiple pivots are mounted vertically or horizontally within a rotary or stationary support structure or platform. The pivots are interconnected via members, and between these pivots, a flexible sheet of material is suspended. The mechanism operates via oscillation of a flexible sheet that captures the energy in a fluid flow, and converts it into mechanical motion. The interconnected pivots act in synchronization to vary the angle of attack of the flexible sheet, creating low pressure (lift) areas that impart force into the pivots which then move in an oscillating manner, outputting the energy captured to an energy conversion device. An alternate embodiment makes use of anchors and suspension structures that suspend the entire embodiment in the middle of a fluid flow, and enable remote connection to surfaces not immediately near the location of the device.
