Techniques for placing applications in heterogeneous virtualized systems while minimizing power and migration cost

N applications are placed on M virtualized servers having power management capability. A time horizon is divided into a plurality of time windows, and, for each given one of the windows, a placement of the N applications is computed, taking into account power cost, migration cost, and performance benefit. The migration cost refers to cost to migrate from a first virtualized server to a second virtualized server for the given one of the windows. The N applications are placed onto the M virtualized servers, for each of the plurality of time windows, in accordance with the placement computed in the computing step for each of the windows. In an alternative aspect, power cost and performance benefit, but not migration cost, are taken into account; there are a plurality of virtual machines; and the computing step includes, for each of the windows, determining a target utilization for each of the servers based on a power model for each given one of the servers; picking a given one of the servers with a least power increase per unit increase in capacity, until capacity has been allocated to fit all the virtual machines; and employing a first fit decreasing bin packing technique to compute placement of the applications on the virtualized servers.

Power control system using acknowledgments

A power control system for a wireless communications system adjusts the transmit power of a wireless transmitter in relation to a number of acknowledgments expected for radio transmissions over a wireless link. For example, a wireless unit monitors the number of acknowledgments it receives (or fails to receive) for radio packets that the wireless unit transmitted over the wireless link. The wireless unit determines the number of acknowledgments lost in relation to the number of acknowledgments expected to be received by the wireless unit. The number of acknowledgments expected by the wireless unit can be based on the number of radio packets transmitted by the wireless unit. If the number of ACKs lost / number of ACKs expected is greater than a first threshold, the wireless unit increases the transmit power level. If the number of ACKs lost / the number of ACKs expected is below a second threshold, the wireless unit decreases the transmit power level.

Sound signal adjustment apparatus and method, and telephone

A telephone with a speaker and a microphone uses the speaker both as an electric-to-acoustic transducer, to reproduce the far end party's voice, and an acoustic-to-electric transducer, to capture external sound in the vicinity of the near end party. From the captured sound signal and the signal picked up by the microphone, a decision unit decides whether or not the external sound is being blocked. When the external sound is blocked, a volume control unit increases the volume of the far end party's voice as reproduced by the speaker. The near end party can accordingly turn up the speaker volume by moving the part of the telephone including the speaker close to the user's ear to block external sound, without having to manipulate any manual controls.

Exhaust gas purifying apparatus

A throttle unit placed in an exhaust gas passage controls an opening-ratio of each of first and second valve members to control a gas-flow sectional area of the exhaust gas passage. When the temperature of a three-way catalyst is low, the throttle unit introduces the exhaust gas flow into a part of an outer-periphery of the three-way catalyst. This control can rapidly increase the temperature of the three-way catalyst from an early period of starting an internal combustion engine within a short period of time. The throttle unit increases the gas-flow sectional area of the exhaust gas passage according to increasing the temperature of the three-way catalyst. When the three-way catalyst reaches its activation temperature, the throttle unit instructs the first and second valve members to fully open. This decreases a pressure loss of the exhaust gas because the exhaust gas is supplied into the entire of the three-way catalyst.

Braking drum with bionic non-smooth surface

A drum break with bionic rough surface characters high friction index, anti-wear, anti-heat fatigue. On the surface of the drum break distribute knaggy units of height 0.15-0.5 mm in parallel or net. The structure and chemical components of the knaggy units increase the ability of anti-friction and anti-heat fatigue of the drum break. The structure of the knaggy units changes a surface friction to point friction therefore reduce wearniess of the drum break. The life this knagg drum break is 1.5-3 times of that of same material in smooth.
