The invention provides a backlight compensation method and device. The method comprises the following steps: an image of the current frame is acquired, and the image of the current frame is judged whether to be in the backlight state; if the image of the current frame is in the backlight state, then the average contrast of a first component corresponding to the image of the current frame is acquired, and the average contrast is judged whether to be greater than a first preset threshold value; if the average contrast is less than or equal to the first preset threshold value, then an adjustment coefficient of the first component is acquired according to the average contrast, and the average value of a second component corresponding to the image of the current frame is acquired; the average value is judged whether to be greater than a second preset threshold value; if the average value is less than or equal to the second preset threshold value, then an adjustment coefficient of the second component is acquired according to the average value; and the first component and the second component are adjusted according to the adjustment coefficient of the first component and the adjustment coefficient of the second component so as to perform backlight compensation on the image of the current frame. According to the method of the embodiments of the invention, the image or video shooting quality of a camera in the backlight state can be significantly improved, so the user experience can be improved.
