Techniques for managing database systems with a community server

Techniques for managing databases include registering multiple databases at a community server. Each database is controlled by a different party. The community server is accessible over a first network to which one or more users from each party have access. Each database is installed on a different network than the first network. The community server receives from a user over the first network a request to perform a management operation relating to a particular database that is controlled by a particular party. The community server determines that the particular database is registered and determines whether the user is authorized to perform the management operation. If the user is authorized, then the community server causes the management operation to be performed.
With these techniques, one or more database devices, such as database appliances, can be managed over the Internet with a browser, at least for many common database management functions. This alleviates the load on an enterprise database manager platform, provides metadata even when the database device or enterprise platform is not working, provides ready backup when a database device or enterprise platform returns to operation, and enables a database administrator for the enterprise to perform some management functions while on the road, away from the site of the enterprise. It can also provide users of an enterprise's database devices with access to some database metadata when the user is on the road or the enterprise equipment is not operating.

Method and apparatus for determining a network topology in the presence of network address translation

The present invention may be used for determining a topology of a network in the presence of network address translation. From an active client behind a translating device, communications are initiated that effect the network address translation. The communications are monitored beyond the translating device to infer partitioning of servers into equivalence sets relative to the network topology induced by the network address translation. Active clients behind the translating device may include a respective actual sending address in a message sent to a server beyond the translating device. The server beyond the translating device distinguishes between communications affected by and not affected by network address translation, which may include comparing an apparent source address of a message against an actual address provided in the message by the active client behind the translation device. The external server may also distinguish between active and passive client messages. The server server may cause a message to a passive client to be redirected to an active client; the active client, in turn, communicates to the external server. The external server stores addresses of devices in translated address sets, which may be maintained in a database and managed in a database manager.

Method and apparatus for managing multimedia files

A system for locating, segmenting, annotating and retrieving multimedia files, provides a database of metadata (68) relating to multimedia files (70), a database manager (64), and a database client (66) for accessing the data contained within the database. The database client (66), together with the metadata database (68) and database manager (64) provide a variety of different functionalities, namely a deep linking functionality, a segmentation functionality, a metadata annotation functionality, a retrieval functionality, and an access functionality. The user, through database client (68) annotates the multimedia file or segment of multimedia file with metadata which is saved in the database (68). When the user desires to locate a multimedia file, the metadata is searched or browsed to locate the database entry associated with the multimedia file in question. The system further provides the ability for the user to load, open and start the playing of a multimedia file from a point intermediate to its start and end point, and without the user having to experience the portion between the start point and the intermediate point, break down larger files into shorter segments or individual frames (or still images) or regions within frames (or still images) without creating additional copies of the selected segments of the multimedia files of interest, thereby avoiding copyright issues from arising.
