Automated method for identifying and repairing logical data discrepancies between database replicas in a database cluster

A method and system for monitoring and maintaining the consistency of replicated databases in a shared-nothing database cluster architecture is presented. The method involves the continuous monitoring of the database transaction logs that are maintained by the autonomous database managers that manage the individual database replicas in the cluster. In the event that data discrepancies are detected via the comparison of the transaction logs of the individual database replicas, remedial action is carried out according to configured rules in the main cluster controller. These remedial actions may include, but are not limited to, making a database node inactive within the cluster, or automatically repairing any data discrepancies that are detected among the database replicas in the cluster.

Method, computer program product, and system of optimized data translation from relational data storage to hierarchical structure

A tagging tree that defines a hierarchical output data structure and relational database query operations that retrieve the data to be included in each hierarchical section is accepted and processed. A query optimizer analyzes the tagging tree to determine database query operations that can be combined into a single query command. An outer-union query command is generated to allow efficient combination of multiple query commands, some of which are predicates to others. The tagging tree is modified to replace the database queries that were combined into the outer-union query to extract data from the results set produced by the outer-union query as opposed to submitting queries to the database manager. The optimized queries can be reused an arbitrary number of times to leverage the optimizing resources that were used in their creation.

Application-independent generator to generate a database transaction manager in heterogeneous information systems

A heterogeneous information system such as a digital library often uses a database manager together with other data resource manager(s), such as an object server or a video server, to manage digital content. Such a system often needs to maintain an application-specific database and / or to handle application-specific operational requirements. To facilitate system integration and application development, an application-independent reusable product is created which generates a custom system component or utility, such as a loader, according to a specification provided by a system integrator or an application developer.

Techniques for managing database systems with a community server

Techniques for managing databases include registering multiple databases at a community server. Each database is controlled by a different party. The community server is accessible over a first network to which one or more users from each party have access. Each database is installed on a different network than the first network. The community server receives from a user over the first network a request to perform a management operation relating to a particular database that is controlled by a particular party. The community server determines that the particular database is registered and determines whether the user is authorized to perform the management operation. If the user is authorized, then the community server causes the management operation to be performed. With these techniques, one or more database devices, such as database appliances, can be managed over the Internet with a browser, at least for many common database management functions. This alleviates the load on an enterprise database manager platform, provides metadata even when the database device or enterprise platform is not working, provides ready backup when a database device or enterprise platform returns to operation, and enables a database administrator for the enterprise to perform some management functions while on the road, away from the site of the enterprise. It can also provide users of an enterprise's database devices with access to some database metadata when the user is on the road or the enterprise equipment is not operating.

Method and apparatus for determining a network topology in the presence of network address translation

The present invention may be used for determining a topology of a network in the presence of network address translation. From an active client behind a translating device, communications are initiated that effect the network address translation. The communications are monitored beyond the translating device to infer partitioning of servers into equivalence sets relative to the network topology induced by the network address translation. Active clients behind the translating device may include a respective actual sending address in a message sent to a server beyond the translating device. The server beyond the translating device distinguishes between communications affected by and not affected by network address translation, which may include comparing an apparent source address of a message against an actual address provided in the message by the active client behind the translation device. The external server may also distinguish between active and passive client messages. The server server may cause a message to a passive client to be redirected to an active client; the active client, in turn, communicates to the external server. The external server stores addresses of devices in translated address sets, which may be maintained in a database and managed in a database manager.

Method and apparatus for selective caching of transactions in a computer system

A database manager selectively caches journal entries for certain database changes based on dynamic selection criteria. Preferably, a journal disk drive is provided for storing changes to the database. Database change entries are sequentially cached in a main memory journal buffer, awaiting journal write. When a buffer is filled, its buffer contents are written to the journal disk. However, certain change operations will cause the contents of the buffer to be written to the journal disk immediately, before filling the buffer. Certain database change entries selectively cause the buffer to be written, depending on dynamic selection criteria. Preferably, these selection criteria take into account both the estimated time to recover in the event of a system crash and the current level of activity on the system. Generally, the busier the system, the more data will be cached, and vice versa.
