In a closed-loop wireless communication system, a codebook-based feedback mechanism is provided to enable non-unitary precoding for multi-stream transmission, where in each stream is optimized with suitable transmission power allocation and AMC. The codebook-based feedback mechanism uses a precoding codebook having a power allocation matrix which is constrained to specify that beamforming always applies full power to a predetermined beam. With this constraint, a one-bit power allocation feedback index may be used to switch between beamforming and spatial multiplexing.

An interleaving method and apparatus is disclosed for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital audio broadcasting (DAB) system. The disclosed interleaver method and apparatus utilize a convolutional interleaver having a row size equal to one OFDM symbol and a time span of arbitrary size. A structured memory block is utilized in the de-interleaver at the receiver having a row size of one OFDM symbol (the number of active sub-carriers in the applicable sub-band of the IBOC system). The self-synchronizing nature of the present invention permits a receiver in an OFDM-based IBOC system to sort the scrambled blocks and descramble the received symbols according to its own frame count, without regard to the frame count of the transmitter. The disclosed interleaver method and apparatus does not require interleaver synchronization between the transmitter and receiver. In one implementation, separate convolutional encoders and convolutional interleavers are applied to each sub-band in a multi-stream structure to provide independent error spreading for each sub-band.

Update data to a non-volatile memory may be recorded in at least two interleaving streams such as either into an update block or a scratch pad block depending on a predetermined condition. The scratch pad block is used to buffered update data that are ultimately destined for the update block. Synchronization information about the order recording of updates among the streams is saved with at least one of the streams. An end station for a videoconference/multimedia conference is disclosed, where the end station requests, receives and displays multiple video streams. Call control messages request video streams with specified video policies. A static policy specifies a constant source video stream, e.g., a participant. A dynamic policy dynamically maps various source streams to a requested stream and shows, for example, the current speaker, or a round robin of participants. A network access device, e.g., a media switch or a video composition system, mediates between the multi-stream end station and the core conference system. Multi-stream endpoints need not handle the complexity of directly receiving video according to a potentially wide variety of call control protocols, formats, and bit-rates. Multi-stream endpoints decentralize compositing video streams, which increases functional flexibility and reduces the need for centralized equipment.

In a memory that is programmable page by page and each page having multiple sectors that are once-programmable, even if successive writes are sequential, the data recorded to an update block may be fragmented and non-sequential. Instead of recording update data to an update block, the data is being recorded in at least two interleaving streams. When a full page of data is available, it is recorded to the update block. Otherwise, it is temporarily recorded to the scratch pad block until a full page of data becomes available to be transferred to the update block. Preferably, a pipeline operation allows the recording to the update block to be set up as soon as the host write command indicates a full page could be written. If the actual write data is incomplete due to interruptions, the setup will be canceled and recording is made to the scratch pad block instead.

A method for communication includes providing an item of media content for streaming in a plurality of versions having different, respective bit rates. The media content is streamed from a server to a client by transmitting a first version of the item over a network at a first bit rate from the server to the client via a server buffer associated with the server and monitoring a fill level of the server buffer while streaming the media content. The server switches to transmitting a second version of the item at a second bit rate, different from the first bit rate, to the client in response to a change in the fill level of the server buffer.

The present invention relates to a merging network for multiple data streams comprising a pipelined butterfly network. The pipelined butterfly network comprises an input network for receiving a plurality of data streams of mutually constant widths, each data stream having logically related data bits carried on contiguous signal lines, a butterfly network containing suitably interconnected register and multiplexer means for rearranging the received data streams into a time-multiplexed constant-width output data stream, the output data stream having a width equal to or greater than the sum of the widths of the input data streams, and an output network for providing the output data stream interleaved to an output bus.

Robust microfluidic mixing devices mix multiple fluid streams passively, without the use of moving parts. In one embodiment, these devices contain microfluidic channels that are formed in various layers of a three-dimensional structure. In the event of a subsequent failure in the current TCP connection a subsequent portion of the plurality of messages may be communicated via a subsequent TCP connection associated with a different network interface. A method for efficiently transmitting several multimedia streams to one or more multimedia receivers is disclosed comprising: defining a minimum acceptable time for rendering a multimedia stream to a user when the user selects a particular stream; defining a packet size for packets containing data for each multimedia stream, the packet size defined based on one or more performance characteristics of mass storage devices on the one or more multimedia receivers; concurrently transmitting the packets for each multimedia stream to the one or more multimedia receivers; continually storing the multimedia streams on the mass storage devices; and playing back the multimedia content from the mass storage devices responsive to a user tuning to a particular multimedia stream when a delay greater than the minimum acceptable time would otherwise result waiting for a next packet containing data for the particular multimedia stream to arrive.

Multiple video streams can be transmitted over a high speed link. A connection with a receiver can be detected by a transmitter. The transmitter can then establish a link with the receiver. Multiple streams of video data can be packed into a transfer unit. The transmitter can then transmit the transfer unit with the multiple stream video data over one or more lanes of the link to the receiver. A high speed communications link between a receiver and a transmitter can transmit data for multiple video streams over a single lane within a data link.
