Object customization and presentation system

A method for generating a personalized presentation, comprising providing an Internet browser user interface for selecting an image and a surrounding context; receiving the selected image and surrounding context by an Internet web server; accounting for the user activity in a financial accounting system; and delivering the selected image and surrounding context to the user. The surrounding context may comprise a physical frame for a picture, with a printed version of the selected image framed therein. The accounting step may provide consideration to a rights holder of the selected image, or provide for receipt of consideration from a commercial advertiser. A plurality of images may be selected, wherein the context defines a sequence of display of the plurality of images.

System for protection of goods against counterfeiting

In order to verify the authenticity of manufactured goods, a smart tag is attached to the goods containing encrypted authentication information, such as a serial number, a description of the good's physical appearance or chemical decomposition, its color, or digital images of the good etc. The encryption procedure comprises public / private key encryption with zero-knowledge protocols. Zero knowledge protocols allow a smart tag to be authenticatable and yet be duplication resistant by allowing the verifying agent to convince him / herself that the smart tag is authentic without revealing its authentication information. The verification procedure can be done using a reader at a point of sale (POS) machine equipped with the appropriate public key and zero-knowledge protocols to decrypt the authentication information. A printed version of the serial number or other authentication information may be placed on the goods in human readable form to quickly verify the information electronically read from the smart tag. With the present invention, only the manufacturer can create such smart tags with the associated data thus making it virtually impossible to pass off a counterfeit good as authentic. In addition to authenticating counterfeit goods, the present invention can be used to detect authentic goods being sold in a parallel market.

System and method for providing online versions of print-medium publications

Apparatus and method for automatic adaptation of an image of a print page into a version suitable for an electronic screen. An input obtains an electronic image of a page of the print publication, the page comprising items, such as headlines, images and articles, arranged in a print version layout. A layout parser parses the page layout, the parsing comprising identifying the items arranged therein, including identifying boundaries of the items within the layout, and text belonging to the items. A text sizing unit selects text sizes for respective items to render the items readable when the text is shown on screen as part of the page. The resized text may no longer fit into the boundaries so a text flowing unit flows text of the item dynamically, thereby to provide an electronic screen version of the image of the page, the screen version retaining the print version layout and having text sized to be readable when shown on a screen.

Electronic Annotation Of Documents With Preexisting Content

In a pen-based computing system, a printed version of a document having preexisting content is annotated using a smart pen. The smart pen captures handwriting gestures to obtain an electronic representation of the annotations. The smart pen computing system identifies a digital version of the document having the preexisting content and stores the electronic representation of the annotations in association with the digital document. The smart pen computing system may overlay the electronic representation of the annotations with the preexisting content to provide a digital representation of the annotated document.

Method of using the internet to retrieve and handle articles in electronic form from printed publication which have been printed in paper form for circulation by the publisher

A method and system of using the Internet to retrieve printed articles from printed media. The method of the present invention first tags each printed article that is to be published in print. The tag is also printed with the printed article to allow readers to identify. The printed article and its tag are collected and stored in a database, which is accessible through the Internet or the Worldwide Web. When a reader finds a printed article of interest to the reader on the print version of the media, the reader sends a request with the tag to the database. Upon receiving the request and the tag, the database is searched to locate the printed article. Upon locating the stored printed article in the database, it is transmitted to the reader's computer or to the reader's email address. Such article can now be stored, filed, distributed, shared in anyway the reader sees fit, all without having to labor through the traditional manual clipping tasks. Additionally, each retrieval of the printed article is bundled with additional information that is relevant to the printed article.

Creating and manufacturing documents that initially exceed equipment finishing capacity

Techniques described herein overcome many of the issues that have previously made the printing of a single copy of a book from a digital version unattractive and infeasible. According to one embodiment of the invention, an automated mechanism such as a computer program automatically determines whether the spine thickness of a to-be-printed copy of a digital version of a book will exceed the specified maximum spine thickness that a specified binding or other finishing device can handle. In response to determining that the spine thickness will exceed the specified maximum spine thickness, the automated mechanism automatically splits the digital version of the book into two or more volumes such that, for each volume, the spine thickness of the printed version of that volume will be no greater than the specified maximum spine thickness that the specified binding or other finishing device can handle.

Methods for optimizing the layout and printing of pages of Digital publications.

Systems, methods, graphical user interface elements and other implementations are described for optimizing the layout and printing of pages of digital publications to improve legibility of key content while preserving the layout (e.g. without materially altering the position and size of the bounding boxes of content elements featured on the pages) of the printed format (e.g. print version of the publication on which the digital publication is based) hereby ensuring that the advertising space and or space reserved for images and graphics, among others, defined in the printed version remain unchanged. The invention also consisting of methods for printing the resulting, reformatted digital publication.

Methods for identifying marks using a digital master document and scanned image enhancement

To reduce errors introduced by a scanner, an unmarked, digital master document may be generated and stored in digital form so that subsequent scanning of the document is unnecessary to place it in digital form for comparison to a marked version of the document. Additionally, regions or fields, rather than the entire digital master document, may be individually created, stored, and subsequently used for comparison to corresponding portions of a marked version. Further, test targets or patterns may be inserted into the content of a digital master document. Characteristics of image quality degeneration and distortion can be extracted from printed versions of the test targets or patterns and used to effect closed loop control to digitally reduce image quality degeneration caused by the scanner.

Method for measuring intaglio print ink printing plate ink-consumption amount

The invention discloses a testing method for an ink consumption of a gravure ink color scraping version, including: the equal volume of a primary liquid and a liquid waste is picked up randomly from a scraping version primary liquid storage tank and the liquid waste outtake beside a machine and then is put into different constant weighted evaporating pans respectively; a standard hydrochloric acid is dropped into the evaporating pans till the pH value reaching seven plus or minus 0.2; the evaporating pans are placed in a water-bath to be dried and then dried to constant weighting and recording. According to the weight of a solid residue and the consumption statistics of the gravure ink color scraping version liquid, the solid ink residue weight scraped in a printed version for one piece of paper can be calculated. According to the volatile content of every kind of ink, a total volatile content can be calculated which, with the solid residue weight, can be compensated for the scraped ink quantity on the printer version of each paper when printing. The invention has the advantages of simple operation and more accurate testing result.
