A virtual appliance environment (VAE) consists of components residing on a computer BIOS ROM and also on a mass storage device. The VAE includes a virtual appliance (VA) for diagnosing malfunctioning hardware or software. An architecture and method is provided that facilitates serialization of a graph of objects into streams of data in an arbitrary format, and deserialization of the streams of data back into the graph of objects. The architecture provides a number of services associated with the basic functionality of serialization and deserialization. The services can be employed to implement transparent remoting, copy items to a clipboard and save data to a file. The present invention provides facilities which support the plugging in of a new serialization encoding by separating the encoding from the reading and reinstantiation of the graph of objects which the encoding describes. Objects in a graph of objects are serialized and deserialized based on a selected rule set for that object. A rule set can be provided by a class author within a class or within a third party file referred to as a surrogate.

A framework may include an object model and services. The framework may gather information at run-time from metadata within the object model before the framework operates on the classes. The invention relates to a video compressing and encoding method with an alpha transparent channel, comprising the following steps of: inverting the acquired video image to the image in the format of RGB or YUV4:4:4/YUV4:2:2/YUV4:2:0; compressing the acquired data in the alpha transparent channel in a no-damage mode; encoding and compressing video data for the video image in the specific format according to the frame format of MPEG-2 I and saving the compressed data in the alpha transparent channel in the compressed data structure of the video image. The method realizes the encoding of a specific video picture, can use a standard MPEG2 encoder for encoding, and effectively reduces video bitrate when ensuring the high quality of the video so as to realize the video data encoding with high quality, high efficiency and low cost. Because the data of the alpha transparent channel and the compressed data of the video image are saved in the same file, the video compressing and encoding method not only simplifies the process of processing the image at the later period and the information sharing between file management and a program, but also reserves the original video which is not added with the data of the alpha transparent channel.

A source storage server receives various write requests from a set of clients, logs each request in local memory, and forwards each log entry to a destination storage server at a secondary site. At a consistency point, the source storage server saves data, modified per the requests, to a first set of mass storage devices, and also initiates a synchronization phase during which process the modified data is mirrored at the secondary site. The destination storage server uses data in the received log entries to mirror at least a portion of the modified data in a second set of mass storage devices located at the secondary site, such that said portion of the modified data does not have to be sent from the source storage server to the destination storage server at the consistency point.

A system and method to implement a rollback mechanism for a data storage unit (“DSU”). A request to write new data to a write location on the DSU is intercepted. In one technique, a copy of the old data currently residing at the write location on the DSU is saved to enable restoration of the old data to the write location on the DSU. The new data is subsequently written to the write location on the DSU. In another technique, the new data is saved to a second location different from the write location and the old data currently stored at the write location is preserved to enable rollback of the DSU to a previous state.
