A method and device are disclosed which receives packets streamed over a packet network, decodes the packets received to generate a decoded signal stream and filters the decoded signal stream to generate a pulse code modulated (PCM) signal stream. The PCM signal stream may be tailored to conform to the target destination transport requirements, including call channels established over circuit-switched networks, whether wired or wireless, without modifying the capabilities associated with the network infrastructure or the client phone.

There is provided with an access management apparatus which connects a communication network to a local area network and which manages access from the communication network to the local area network, the access management apparatus including: a packet receiver which receives a packet according to TCP or UDP from the communication network; a database storage unit which stores a database having a port number of the TCP or UDP in association with a MAC address; a MAC address detector which detects a MAC address associated with a destination port number in the packet received by the packet receiver, from the database; a start-up request packet generator which generates a start-up request packet to start up a terminal device having the detected MAC address on the local area network; and an output unit which outputs the generated start-up request packet to the local area network.

A network device with integrated topology discovery functions adapted to virtual local area networks (VLANs). VLAN segments are mapped on a network system formed from multiple network devices. One network device creates and broadcasts a query packet for topology discovery in each VLAN, in response to a command from a management console linked to that network device. At each receiving network device, a query packet receiver receives the query packet, and a reply packet is produced by a reply packet generator. A reply packet transmitter sends the produced reply packet back to the requesting network device. Methods and apparatus are provided for converting video packets into IP packets. Video packets including null packets associated with timing information are received at a network entity coupling a video network to an IP network. A packet telephone system which employs a packet network that provides virtual circuits. The packet telephone system employs short packets containing compressed speech. The use of the short packets makes possible compression and decompression times and bounded delays in the virtual circuits which are together short enough to permit toll-quality telephone service. The packet telephone system employs an intelligent network interface unit to interface between the packet network and standard telephone devices. The network interface unit does the speech compression and decompression and also responds to control packets from the packet network. Consequently, many telephone system features can be implemented in the network interface unit instead of in the switches. The network interface unit may also be used to provide data connections to devices attached to it. The combination of virtual circuits, with bounded delays, short packets, rapid compression and decompression, and intelligent network interface units makes it possible to build a telephone system with fewer and cheaper switches and fewer links for a given volume of traffic than heretofore possible and also permits substantial savings in provisioning and maintaining the system.

A packet network of interconnected nodes employing dynamic backup routing of a Network Tunnel Path (NTP) allocates an active and backup path to the NTP based upon detection of a network failure. Dynamic backup routing employs local restoration to determine the allocation of, and, in operation, to switch between, a primary/active path and a secondary/backup path. Switching from the active path is based on a backup path determined with iterative shortest-path computations with link weights assigned based on the cost of using a link to backup a given link. Costs may be assigned based on single-link failure or single element (node or link) failure. Link weights are derived by assigning usage costs to links for inclusion in a backup path, and minimizing the costs with respect to a predefined criterion.

The test device includes a test packet generator for generating test packets having a destination Internet protocol (IP) address associated with a test device, a memory for storing transmission parameters of the test packets, and a test packet evaluator associated with the IP address in the generated test packets. Methods and systems for a PLD-based network update transport (PNUT) protocol that utilizes UDP and other protocols for transmitting update or other commands or information over a packet-based or IP network. A transmitting station of the data transmission system includes a controller for controlling packet communication quality in accordance with a CQI derived based on a packet so that the packet communication quality may become highest, a packet generator for generating a packet, and a transmitter for transmitting the packet. A system and method are disclosed for reliable communications in a packet network. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a network management system (NMS) having a controller programmed to establish between first and second customer edge (CE) routers in a full mesh packet network first and second logical data tunnels conforming to an isolation protocol, synchronize packet data in the first and second logical data tunnels, enable packet data exchanges between the first and second CE routers over the first logical data tunnel, direct the first and second CE routers to duplicate the packet data exchanged between them over the second logical data tunnel, and direct the first and second CE routers to synchronously switch to the second logical data tunnel upon detecting a fault in the first logical data tunnel.

A test packet generator (225a) within a physical layer device (230) may generate test packets to be communicated over a closed communication path established within the physical layer device (230). The test packets may include a pseudo-random bit sequence. A receiver within the physical layer device (230) may receive at least a portion of the generated test packet. A test packet checker (225b) within the physical layer device may compare at least a portion of the received test packets with at least a portion of the generated test packets in order to determine the bit error rate for the physical layer device. A window counter (225c) within the physical layer device (230) may count at least a portion of a number of bits received within the generated test packets and a number of bits that are in error in at least a portion of the number of bits received. Accordingly, the bit error rate may be calculated based on a ratio of the number of counted bits in error to the number bits counted in the at least a portion of the number of bits received.
