Method, apparatus and computer program product for intuitive energy management of a short-range communication transceiver associated with a mobile terminal

The method, terminal and computer program product determine the acceleration of a mobile terminal associated with the short-range communication transceiver and adjusts the power consumption of the short-range communication transceiver based upon whether a predefined acceleration threshold has been exceeded. To adjust the power consumption, the frequency at which the transceiver is activated may be altered. Thus, the power consumption of the transceiver may be reduced when the acceleration threshold is exceeded and / or may be increased when the acceleration threshold is not exceeded. Due to the adjustment of power consumption by transceivers, power is conserved in the mobile terminals associated with transceivers, which permits the mobile terminals and the transceivers to operate longer without requiring charging or replacement of the power supply.

Intuitive energy management of a short-range communication transceiver associated with a mobile terminal

The method, terminal and computer program product of the present invention are capable of adjusting the power consumption of short-range communication transceivers, such as RFID, IR transceivers or the like. Energy management of the transceiver is achieved by limiting activation of the transceiver to periods of user-interface illumination. The transceiver, therefore, uses less power because it is only activated by an intentional gesture by the user, i.e., a gesture that will initiate the illumination of a user-interface. In addition, the user of terminal is aware, via observation of the illumination, that the terminal is in an active transceiver reading state and, thus, the invention provides for a safe environment in which inadvertent reading of tags or data communication is lessened.

Methods, apparatus, systems and computer program products for energy management of short-range communication modules in mobile terminal devices

The methods, apparatus, systems and computer program products provide for sensing a magnetic field, emitted by a short-range communication source, to activate short-range communication modules in a mobile terminal. In addition to sensing the magnetic field, the terminal may rely on other parameters, such as operational state of the terminal, contextual information and the like, to determine if the short-range communication module should be activated. As such, the invention reduces the overall power consumption of the terminal by limiting the active state of the short-range communication module. By conserving power the mobile terminal is capable of operating for longer periods of time without requiring charging or replacement of the power supply.

Method, terminal and computer program product for adjusting power consumption of a RFID reader associated with a mobile terminal

The method, terminal and computer program product determine the context of the mobile terminal associated with the RFID reader and adjusts the power consumption of the RFID reader based upon the determined context relative to at least one previous context determination. To adjust the power consumption, the frequency at which the RFID reader is actuated may be altered. Thus, the power consumption of the RFID reader may be reduced when no change in the context of the mobile terminal is determined and / or may be increased when a change in the context of the mobile terminal is determined. Due to the adjustment of power consumption by RFID readers, power is conserved in the mobile terminals associated with RFID readers, which permits the mobile terminals and RFID readers to operate longer without requiring charging or replacement of the power supply.

Distributed position estimation for wireless sensor networks

An effective method of allowing a sensor node to estimate its own position, based only on coarse distances to its neighbors, together with an embedding mathematical tool. This method involves four major steps for each of the nodes: estimating distances to and exchange distance information with nearby nodes; performing position estimation locally; broadcasting the result; and refining its estimation. It also supports nodes joining / leaving the network and nodes with lower power. Further, because useful information for position-based routing is already embedded during the position estimation process, no extra transmission is required for efficient route determination in reporting data to a collecting node.

Fast action shock invariant magnetic actuator for firearms

An electromagnetic actuator in one embodiment includes characteristics of very fast actuation, shock invariant design, and compact size. The actuator may be controlled via a small low voltage power source such as a battery and simple switching logic. Such characteristics are ideally suited for incorporating the actuator into the firing mechanism of a firearm, which are subjected to drop tests to confirm the firearm will not discharge in the absence of trigger pull. Very fast snap-like action is attained by balancing the magnetic forces of two opposing permanent magnets around a stationary yoke and rotating member to create three circulating magnetic flux circuits. A central electromagnet coil on the yoke amplifies the magnetic flux of one side of the rotating member or the other depending on the power source actuation polarity, thereby creating two possible snap-like actuation positions. The actuator is usable in firing mechanism release or blocking applications.

Baseball bat

There is provided a baseball bat that has performance similar to that of the conventional wooden bat and moreover is excellent in terms of cost and resource conservation. For this baseball bat 11, a reinforcing core 12 having a rectangular cross section is arranged in the center of the cross section thereof continuously so as to penetrate both end thereof, bamboo pieces 24 are laminated around the reinforcing core 12, and an adhesive is caused to permeate into the contact surface between the reinforcing core 12 and the bamboo pieces 24 evenly under a pressure, by which firm bonding can be attained. In addition, by using a material that is hard and has a large specific gravity as compared with bamboo, such as hickory or reinforced wood, as the reinforcing core 12, the flexural rigidity is enhanced as a whole, and the weight is increased. Therefore, the characteristics and feel in use are improved as compared with the conventional bamboo bat, and the baseball bat 11 can be used as a substitute for a wooden bat. Bamboo, hickory, and reinforced wood have no problem in terms of resource conservation, can reduce the product price, and can lower the consumption of scarce resources such as serrata.
