InactiveUS7346623B2Efficient creation and management and recoveryInput/output to record carriersData processing applicationsData setApplication software
The invention relates to computer readable medium storing program code which when executed on a computer causes the computer to perform a method for creating a quick recovery volume of a primary data set used by a first computer in a backup storage system, which includes identifying a snapshot image of the primary data set generated by a snapshot application, creating the quick recovery volume of the primary data set from the snapshot image of the primary data set and controlling transfer of data from the first computer to an archival storage unit. In one embodiment, the invention provides a method for creating a quick recovery volume of a primary data set that includes creating a snapshot image of the primary data set and creating a quick recovery volume of the primary data set from the snapshot image of the primary data set. In another embodiment, the invention provides a user interface screen enabling browser style browsing and recovery of quick recovery volumes and snapshot images.

Remote disaster data recovery system and method

The present invention provides computer systems, methods, and software products enabling the creation and maintenance of disaster recovery volumes having a reduced impact with regard to network traffic over a communications network. A disaster recovery volume is generally created at a local archival storage unit including therein at least one storage medium constituting the disaster recovery volume. The medium constituting the disaster recovery volume is associated with the primary volume thereby allowing the storage medium constituting the disaster recovery volume to be relocated to a remote archival storage unit at a remote location without compromising the association between the primary volume and the disaster recovery volume. Incremental changes to the primary volume may then be communicated and incorporated in to the disaster recovery relocated to the remote location.

Metadata Management for fixed content distributed data storage

An archival storage cluster of preferably symmetric nodes includes a metadata management system that organizes and provides access to given metadata, preferably in the form of metadata objects. Each metadata object may have a unique name, and metadata objects are organized into regions. Preferably, a region is selected by hashing one or more object attributes (e.g., the object's name) and extracting a given number of bits of the resulting hash value. The number of bits may be controlled by a configuration parameter. Each region is stored redundantly. A region comprises a set of region copies. In particular, there is one authoritative copy of the region, and zero or more backup copies. The number of backup copies may be controlled by a configuration parameter. Region copies are distributed across the nodes of the cluster so as to balance the number of authoritative region copies per node, as well as the number of total region copies per node. Backup region copies are maintained synchronized to their associated authoritative region copy.

A mammography system using a tissue exposure control relying on estimates of the thickness of the compressed and immobilized breast and of breast density to automatically derive one or more technic factors. The system further uses a tomosynthesis arrangement that maintains the focus of an anti-scatter grid on the x-ray source and also maintains the field of view of the x-ray receptor. Finally, the system finds an outline that forms a reduced field of view that still encompasses the breast in the image, and uses for further processing, transmission or archival storage the data within said reduced field of view.

Archival storage and retrieval system

A highly reliable data archival and retrieval method that enables fine grained control over data availability is implemented across a Quality of Service driven archival system, configured to fragment the data into data and parity chunks for storing onto the storage node. The technique employed by the archival system enables files to be read without having need to access any metadata, thereby tolerating complete loss of such metadata. Further, the Quality of Service driven system architecture improves upon the system performance and throughput by means of a storage node regeneration process which ensures balanced load on participating storage node during various storage, retrieval and regeneration operations.

Methods and apparatus for indexing and archiving encoded audio-video data

Archival storage and retrieval of audio / video information is described. Audio and / or video information is digitized, compressed and stored in an intermediate archive format (IAF), which preserves the content at a high-enough quality for subsequent retrieval and conversion into various formats required at the time of use or distribution. A single capture operation is performed with ancillary metadata being added to facilitate subsequent searching, indexing and format conversion. Captured data content is catalogued and indexed at or subsequent to the creation of an IAF file that includes the archived information. The IAF includes a family of audio-video digital encoding formats based on public standards. The encoding format used in any particular application is determined at encoding time from information provided by the archive system user. At encoding, the particular encoding scheme is selected to optimize a tradeoff between storage constraints and end use quality requirements.

Method for improving mean time to data loss (MTDL) in a fixed content distributed data storage

An archival storage cluster of preferably symmetric nodes includes a data protection management system that periodically organizes the then-available nodes into one or more protection sets, with each set comprising a set of n nodes, where “n” refers to a configurable “data protection level” (DPL). At the time of its creation, a given protection set is closed in the sense that each then available node is a member of one, and only one, protection set. When an object is to be stored within the archive, the data protection management system stores the object in a given node of a given protection set and then constrains the distribution of copies of that object to other nodes within the given protection set. As a consequence, all DPL copies of an object are all stored within the same protection set, and only that protection set. This scheme significantly improves MTDL for the cluster as a whole, as the data can only be lost if multiple failures occur within nodes of a given protection set. This is far more unlikely than failures occurring across any random distribution of nodes within the cluster.

Providing executing programs with access to stored block data of others

Techniques are described for managing access of executing programs to non-local block data storage. In some situations, a block data storage service uses multiple server storage systems to reliably store copies of network-accessible block data storage volumes that may be used by programs executing on other physical computing systems, and snapshot copies of some volumes may also be stored (e.g., on remote archival storage systems). A group of multiple server block data storage systems that store block data volumes may in some situations be co-located at a data center, and programs that use volumes stored there may execute on other computing systems at that data center, while the archival storage systems may be located outside the data center. The snapshot copies of volumes may be used in various ways, including to allow users to obtain their own copies of other users' volumes (e.g., for a fee).

System and method for self-recovering real-time data-feed compression and archiving

A system and method for real-time compression and archiving of data files is disclosed. Some data files become so large that archiving onto a single storage medium, such as a CD-ROM or floppy disk, becomes difficult. In order to allow for such archival storage, an initial data file is broken down into smaller data files for compression. Once compressed, successive files are selected for storage onto a first storage medium until the storage medium becomes full. Once the first storage medium is full, the next set of data files is selected and placed onto a second storage medium. This process is repeated until all of the smaller files that originated from the initial file are archived.

Multi-resolution image management system, process, and software therefor

The invention comprises a system, method, and software for selectable, inverse hierarchical management and archival storage of multi-resolution images on multiple storage media for faster access and rendering of the images for electronic and / or print reproduction and distribution. Digital images typically acquired by scanning in Full Resolution (FR) size are organized into logical groups, or rolls. Smaller Screen Size (SCR), Preview (PV), and Thumbnail (TN) size proxy images are created, ranked by resolution, hierarchically and inversely stored with the smaller, lower resolution image files on the fastest media (hard drives) and higher resolution files on the slowest storage / retrieval media (optical or tape drives). This significantly improves effective image density and speeds on screen image retrieval and rendering.
