A DVD game that employs a method for randomly shuffling through a large set of video and/or audio clips using a DVD player is disclosed. The DVD game may be used as a parlor-type game including a game board plus moveable play pieces, trivia question cards, random name cards, a numbered die, and a challenge die. Alternatively, the DVD game may be used in a party-play environment, i.e., where a DVD player repeatedly displays clips (including various puzzles and questions) stored on a DVD disc on a display device. The selection of clips from the DVD disc is performed in a random shuffling manner.

More specifically, large dc variations associated with voltage spikes caused by header regions (32, 33) are scaled (260) relative to a dynamically varying amplitude envelope of the extracted wobble signal (164), such as to identify a start location (300) for each header region. The wobble PLL (179) is effectively allowed to free-run and hold state during periods of header, thereby mitigating the likelihood that the wobble PLL will loose lock during the header regions. Also, with suspension of the wobble PLL triggered by a first spike (300), a counter is initiated to over-sample wobble clock periods to pre-empt a successive header and such that the PLL can be disabled immediately prior to the successive header region. Use of a bandpass filter (156) to extract the wobble signal (164) benefits from generation of a spike at each transition of the header dc level, which spike can be used as a definitive marker for a header region.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a signal processing device which, even when a steep difference in DC level is included in a signal read from a disc such as a DVD-RAM format, cuts off the DC level and pulls the read signal into an appropriate A/D input level with an attempt to cost reduction. A steep difference in DC level between a data section and a CAPA section is absorbed by a first offset unit 1, and an asymmetry which occurs due to variations in the disc manufacturing stage is corrected by a second offset unit 2. In order for write protection of a disc in a bare state that is usually used in a cartridge having a recognition switch for write-protection, such as a DVD-RAM, write protection information is recorded in a Lead-in area, a Lead-out area or a recording information area other than a user data area of the disc, and the data is protected from unwanted overwriting or erasing using the write protection information. Also, even though the write protection information stored on a disc does not match the state of a recognition switch of a case for write-protection, the data can be prevented from unwanted overwriting or erasing. Thus, the write protection can be ensured when a recordable and/or rewritable recording medium, such as DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW, is used in a bare state.

A recording medium for storing defect management information to record real time data, a defect managing method therefor, and a method of recording real time data. The recording medium stores information representing use or non-use of linear replacement defect management in which a defective area on the recording medium is replaced with the spare area, in order to record real time data. While maintaining compatibility between the defect managing method and a defect managing method based on a current DVD-RAM standard, i.e., while allowing a report of the fact that there are blocks which have not been linearly replaced, linear replacement is not performed when real time data is recorded. The method includes the following steps: irradiating a light spot on the DVD-RAM disc with a pickup head; detecting a 4T peak-to-peak level of a RF signal generated by the variable gain amplifier while the light spot is moving within a VFO1 column of a header region of the DVD-RAM disc; comparing the 4T peak-to-peak level with a target level; adjusting a header region RF gain of the variable gain amplifier according to a result of the comparing step.

MPEG2 data streams contain data packets for a set of programs and time stamps for data synchronization purposes. An MPEG2 transport stream is assembled of fixed-length transport packets. The received transport packets of at least one specific program of this set of programs can be stored using for example a DVD Streamer recorder or DVD-RAM recorder. For the real-time playback of recorded specific program data packets each packet needs a separate time stamp. For that reason a timestamp is to be captured for each data packet at recording time. However, capturing of timestamps from a transport stream is a very time consuming action in software implementation processing. Therefore transport stream timestamps are captured for every Nth packet only and the missing timestamps are calculated. Thereby software-processing time is saved for generating the timestamps required for real-time bitstream recording.
