Portable RAM drive

A portable RAM drive comprising data stored on a non-volatile memory and transferable to a volatile memory when the portable RAM drive is coupled to a computer system. When the portable RAM drive is plugged into the computer system, the data from the non-volatile memory may be transferred to the volatile memory for faster access by the computer. If the portable RAM drive is unplugged from the computer, an internal power source may power the portable RAM drive long enough to transfer the data from the volatile memory to the non-volatile memory. In one embodiment, the portable RAM drive may use a restraining device or an indicator light to indicate to the user that the portable RAM drive should not be unplugged from the computer because the data has not yet been transferred from the volatile memory to the non-volatile memory.

The method provided by the invention comprises: firstly, setting a virtual machine memory cache, wherein the size of the memory cache is 512 M; then calling a virtual machine AGENT, calling a RAM drive interface, and partitioning 512 M off a virtual machine memory and virtualizing the 512 M into a memory disk E; then, entering the memory disk E, and creating a folder TEMP; and finally, calling a command CMD, and pointing a system temporary file directory to E:\TEMP. The method provided by the present invention is not limited by physical machine IO, and memory resources are fully utilized; and reading speed of a virtual machine system temporary file is increased, wherein memory reading speed is 20 times faster than hard disk reading speed, so that data access speed can be fast and effectively increased by using a memory to virtualize a hard disk. The method provided by the present invention can be used in a situation in which the reading speed of the virtual machine temporary file needs to be increased.

A system and method for reducing in boot time in an electronic device (10) are disclosed. In one embodiment, a command to power off the electronic device is received. An amount of information stored in at least one of the plurality of memory banks of RAM (60) containing data is calculated. A determination is made as to whether the RAM has sufficient storage space to store compacted data and also form a RAM disk in a portion of the RAM, wherein the step of determining is based at least in part on the amount of information calculated. A RAM disk is initiated in an available memory bank of RAM. The RAM is compacted and a hibernate command is executed wherein the RAM disk is a target for storing the compacted RAM. Power is maintained to memory banks that form the RAM disk and the processor (42) of the portable communication device is set to a power collapse mode.
