Instrumentation and methods are provided for mounting a surgical navigation reference frame to a patient for performing an image-guided surgical procedure on an anatomical component. In one embodiment of the invention, a trocar is positioned within a cannula to form an insertion device adapted for percutaneous introduction into the patient. A bone anchor having a bone engaging portion is inserted through the cannula and is anchored to bone. The bone anchor cooperates with the cannula to form a mounting device adapted for coupling with the surgical navigation reference frame. In one embodiment of the invention, an image-guided surgical procedure is performed at a location remote from the anchoring location. In a specific embodiment, an image-guided surgical procedure is performed adjacent the spinal column, with the bone engaging portion of the bone anchor anchored to the iliac region of the pelvic bone, and more specifically to the iliac crest of the pelvic bone.

Abdominal postoperative binder and method of use

The invention is a postoperative binder and method of use. The binder is made of relatively inelastic material that is cut to fit the patient and held in place by a plurality of tails fastened with Velcro(R) binders. The present invention uses mechanical, rather than elastic, compression. Mechanical loads are carried over the iliac crest, by hooking the tails of the binder over the iliac crest and then bifurcating the tails for attachment to the abdominal portion of the binder. The present invention provides support of lower abdominal tissue, especially near the genitals and in the area of the peritoneum. The invention is also a method of preventing post-operative wound infection, reducing incidence of seroma and hematoma formation and wound separation while reducing pain and the need for pain medication by passing a relatively inelastic abdominal binder over the patient's iliac crest and abdomen to place the binder in tension so as to provide a greater than 180 degree radius of compression to the wound.

The present invention is a three dimensional Cartesian coordinate system for the human body, having three perpendicular and intersecting planes. The present invention is based upon the use of the three cardinal planes, in the universally recognized orientations. The cardinal planes in accordance with the present invention are: Sagittal: midsagittal plane, Transverse: upper-most extent of the iliac crests, and Coronal: anterior-most aspect of the vertebral canal. The point at which these planes intersect defines the 0,0,0 location in the human body.

A method for performing an acetabular arthroplasty in an acetabulum of an ilium may include locating an iliac canal of the ilium. The iliac canal extends from the surface of the acetabulum generally toward a portion of the iliac ridge. An impacting step impacts a non-rotating bone removal tool aligned along the iliac canal such that the non-rotating bone removal tool removes bone within the iliac canal and forms a bone void. Another step secures a fixation implant within the canal void. An acetabular implant is installed within the acetabulum over the fixation implant.

Back therapy device

An inflatable bladder is used to articulate the spine of a user. A pelvis pad includes a support frame and a pliable cushion positioned thereon. The bladder is supported on the support frame and received by a void in the cushion. In the preferred embodiment the bladder includes two upper portions that extend away from the support frame toward the body of the user. The upper portions of the bladder, or two separate bladders, are cylindrical in shape when expanded. The void in the cushion is also cylindrical in shape and therefore acts to guide the expansion and contraction of the bladders or upper portions of the bladder. The upper portions are preferably positioned eleven inches apart and inflate at least two inches above the support frame. This proximity of the upper portions of the bladder fit the width of the right and left anterior superior illiac spine along the illiac crest of the pelvis. Expansion of the bladder applies a posterior force to the pelvis through the illiac crest and rotates the pelvis. This manipulates the lumbar spine to stretch the muscles of the lower back and increase the posterior disk spacing of the lumbar vertebrae, providing mild lumbar traction.

Adjustable pelvic compression belt and methods for reducing the width of, and/or realigning, a user's hips

An adjustable pelvic compression belt for the reducing the width of, and / or realigning, a user's hips that is particularly adapted for post-parturition use. The belt may include an inner belt to be wrapped around the user's hips and positioned below the iliac crest. The midpoint of an outer belt may be attached to the inner belt at or near the midpoint of the inner belt. The ends of the outer belt may be adjusted to cinch the inner belt around the hips of the user, thereby compressing the user's pelvic girdle. Thereafter, the outer belt may be incrementally adjusted to further compress the user's pelvic girdle resulting in a narrowing of the user's hips. The belt is preferably worn within two to three months post-parturition or during a period in which relaxin is being administered to the user, and has a strength and thickness that facilitates use under garments.
