Instrumentation and methods are provided for mounting a surgical navigation reference frame to a patient for performing an image-guided surgical procedure on an anatomical component. In one embodiment of the invention, a trocar is positioned within a cannula to form an insertion device adapted for percutaneous introduction into the patient. A bone anchor having a bone engaging portion is inserted through the cannula and is anchored to bone. The bone anchor cooperates with the cannula to form a mounting device adapted for coupling with the surgical navigation reference frame. In one embodiment of the invention, an image-guided surgical procedure is performed at a location remote from the anchoring location. In a specific embodiment, an image-guided surgical procedure is performed adjacent the spinal column, with the bone engaging portion of the bone anchor anchored to the iliac region of the pelvic bone, and more specifically to the iliac crest of the pelvic bone.

This invention provides a surgical method to treat hip diseases, including Legg-Calve-Perthes disease or developmental hip dysplasia. This method includes several surgical techniques: a transverse osteotomy of the posterior portion of supraacetabular portion, an oblique and inclined osteotomy of the anterior portion of the supraacetabulum, detachment of a bone block from iliac crest, anterolateral displacement of the distal fragment, and insertion of the bone block into the distracted space of the osteotomy site.

Instrumentation and methods are provided for performing image-guided spinal surgery using an anterior surgical approach. In one embodiment, the method comprises providing a surgical navigation reference device, mounting the reference device to bone at a location remote from the spinal column and in a substantially fixed position relative thereto, accessing a portion of the spinal column from an anterior direction, and performing an image-guided surgical procedure on the spinal column using an anterior surgical approach. In another embodiment, the mounting of the reference device comprises anchoring the reference device to a portion of the patient's pelvic bone, and more specifically the anterior region of the iliac crest. The invention is a postoperative binder and method of use. The binder is made of relatively inelastic material that is cut to fit the patient and held in place by a plurality of tails fastened with Velcro(R) binders. A spinal orthosis is provided that includes a cervical section, a lumbar section, a thoracic section and a tensioner. The cervical section has one or more pads configured for placement at a clavicle of a wearer. The lumbar section is connected to the cervical section and has an abdominal Para-umbilical buttress configured for an anterior region of a lumbar spine. The buttress is further configured to provide compression and gripping of the spine. The lumbar section includes one or more digits with a gripping portion at around ribs and/or iliac crest of the wearer. The thoracic section is connected to the cervical section. The tensioner connects the lumbar section to the thoracic section.

An inflatable bladder is used to articulate the spine of a user. A pelvis pad includes a support frame and a pliable cushion positioned thereon. The bladder is supported on the support frame and received by a void in the cushion. In the preferred embodiment the bladder includes two upper portions that extend away from the support frame toward the body of the user. The upper portions of the bladder, or two separate bladders, are cylindrical in shape when expanded. The void in the cushion is also cylindrical in shape and therefore acts to guide the expansion and contraction of the bladders or upper portions of the bladder. The upper portions are preferably positioned eleven inches apart and inflate at least two inches above the support frame. This proximity of the upper portions of the bladder fit the width of the right and left anterior superior illiac spine along the illiac crest of the pelvis. Expansion of the bladder applies a posterior force to the pelvis through the illiac crest and rotates the pelvis. This manipulates the lumbar spine to stretch the muscles of the lower back and increase the posterior disk spacing of the lumbar vertebrae, providing mild lumbar traction.

The present invention relates to a lumbar support belt (1), which includes an elastic band (2) having a central portion (5) and a first end portion (6) and a second end portion (7). A cushion (14) is attached onto the inner surface (3) of the central portion of the band in a manner centered relative to the transverse medial axis (12). The cushion is V-shaped, the point of which is directed downward when the belt is worn, and has two flanges (15, 16) that are connected by a joining area (17). The cushion (14) is designed and placed such that, when the belt is worn, the free end portion (20) of each flange (15, 16) bears on the corresponding iliac crest of the person and moreover such that the joining area (17) is in contact with the area that includes the top portion of the sacrum and the bottom portion of the lumbar vertebrae of the person.
