Cellular phone with scanning capability

A cellular phone is provided with a media scanning capability. Scanner optics, an optional light source and related scanning circuitry is integrated within a cellular phone to enable image or text scanning, facsimile, text-to-speech conversion, and language translation. Position sensors provide position data as the scanner is manually moved, in one or more passes across the scanned media, to enable a bit-mapped image of the strip to be created in a data buffer. Image data from the strips is processed to remove redundant overlap data and skew position errors, to give a bit-mapped final image of the entire scanned item. Image compression is provided to compress the image into standard JPEG format for storage or transmission, or into facsimile format for transmission of the document to any fax machine. Optical character recognition (OCR) is provided to convert image data to text which may be sent as email, locally displayed, stored for later use, or further processed. Further processing of text data includes language translation and text to speech conversion of either the original or translated text. The resulting speech audio can be heard locally or transmitted over the cellular network.

Network facsimile apparatus capable of E-mail communications

A data terminal which is coupled to an local area network and a public switched telephone network includes a sub-address generator that generates a sub-address based on an electronic mail address and a predetermined functional operation method. A data table generator generates an address conversion table correlating a plurality of sub-addresses to corresponding input electronic mail addresses. Each of the plurality of sub-addresses being uniquely coupled with a corresponding electronic mail address that is uniquely assigned to a single client terminal. The data terminal also includes memory to store the address conversion table and a terminal controller. The terminal controller checks an incoming call from a facsimile machine containing facsimile image information and a sub-address representing a destination client terminal, and upon receiving such incoming facsimile image information and sub-address, the controller determines an electronic mail address corresponding to the sub-address using the address conversion table. The controller then relays the facsimile image information to the destination client terminal at the determined appropriate electronic mail address.

Document transmission Techniques I

A method of delivering a digital document to an intended recipient at a printout station, such as a fax machine. The method comprises receiving and securely retaining a transmitted document and a transmitted independently verifiable data record such as a digital certificate of the intended recipient at the printout station. A first token, such as a public key, of the intended recipient is obtained, usually from the transmitted information. The method includes requesting proof of the intended recipient's identity at the receiving fax machine using data in the digital certificate of the intended recipient and releasing the document when the intended recipient has proved their identity by use of a second token, such as a private key, that is uniquely related to the first token. The private key may be provided on a portable smart card. Also envelope data encryption techniques may be used to add security to the transmission of the document.

Communication apparatus

A communication apparatus allows an efficient transmission / reception of a document for a sender and a receiver at their respective desired time and location. When a first user transmits a document using a facsimile machine (transmitting device) managed by a server, first, an account of the transmitting device is registered on the server. In such a state, when the first user inputs an account of a second user as a destination into the transmitting device, the transmitting device inquires the server of a registration status of the second user. The server checks the registration status of the account of the second user. When the account of the second user is registered on any facsimile machine (receiving device), the server notifies the transmitting device that the account of the second user is registered on the receiving device. Then, the transmitting device transmits a connection demand to the receiving device to transmit data of the document.

Data transmission/reception system that informs a user that image data has been transmitted

A data transmission / reception system provides the recipient of image data with flexible options for handling the image data. The system transmits notification mail to a cellular phone owned by the recipient when transmitting facsimile data from a transmitting facsimile machine to a receiving facsimile machine. The recipient transmits a command from the cellular phone indicating how the facsimile data received by the receiving facsimile machine should be handled. In response to the command received from the cellular phone, the receiving facsimile machine either forms an image based on the facsimile data on paper or forwards the facsimile data to another facsimile machine near the recipient. Accordingly, the recipient can transmit a forwarding command instructing the receiving facsimile machine to transmit the facsimile data to a facsimile machine nearby when the recipient is in a remote location, thereby enabling the recipient to view an image based on the facsimile data at any time.
