The gear shifting prompting method comprises the following steps: (1) at least collecting speed, rotating speed, engine load rate and gear information of a current vehicle; and (2) judging the engine load rate and executing the following steps according to the engine load rate: a, if the engine load rate is greater than a set high value, not prompting or prompting downshift; b, if the engine load rate is smaller than a set low value, promptingupshift; and c, if the engine load rate is greater than or equal to the set low value but smaller than or equal to the set high value, not prompting. By judging the engine load rate to prompt gears of the vehicle intelligent, a problem that the condition that the vehicle is short of power and potential safety hazards are easily caused as the rotating speed is limited when the vehicle needs relatively high power is avoided.
