A one-touch Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) is provided that allows for a simplified user interface and simplified user operation. The user interface allows the CAFS to activate upon a single press of a single button. An electronic controller checks that several CAFS device parameters show that the CAFS is capable of operating. The controller gathers the device parameter data from a diagnostic system present in the CAFS that gives data pertaining to whether water is flowing, whether foam concentrate is present in the system, whether foam is flowing, and whether the temperature of an air compressor is within a safe range for operation. If the above device parameters are found to be in condition for safe operation of the CAFS, the controller will start and maintain operation until either one of the above falls out of tolerance or the user initiates a shut down of the CAFS.

The CAFS then generates high volumes of effective fire-extinguishing and preventive micellar-foam solution at the attack point of the fire itself rather than refilling at a remote base. It accesses ater contained in a helicopter's Bambi Bucket and refills from a fixed wing plane or other water containing reservoir. A pressure regulator is capable of automatically regulating the inlet water pressure to a compressed air foam system (CAFS), thereby allowing direct connection between a high-pressure water source, such as a hydrant, and the CAFS. The pressure regulator includes an inlet, a valve that regulates flow from the inlet, and an annular piston that circumscribes the inlet and which is linked to the valve. An apparatus for generating foam for use in a compressed air foam system (CAFS) incorporates two plates housed in a chamber. A surfactant solution enters the chamber through an orifice in one plate. Pressurized air enters the chamber through a number of channels bored through the other plate, the channels appearing in an annular groove which circumscribes the solution inlet. The restricted area between the plates balances the pressure between the incoming solution and air by achieving an equilibrium at some particular radius out from the center of the two plates.
