64 results about "Outside plant" patented technology

In telecommunication, the term outside plant has the following meanings: In civilian telecommunications, outside plant refers to all of the physical cabling and supporting infrastructure, and any associated hardware located between a demarcation point in a switching facility and a demarcation point in another switching center or customer premises. In the United States, the DOD defines outside plant as the communications equipment located between a main distribution frame and a user end instrument. The CATV industry divides its fixed assets between head end or inside plant, and outside plant. The electrical power industry also uses the term outside plant to refer to electric power distribution systems.

Method and apparatus for traffic shaping in a broadband fiber-based access system

The invention is a novel method and apparatus for controlling the flow of traffic between a host digital terminal (HDT) and a plurality of optical network units (ONUs). Each ONU is connected to the HDT by optical fiber and to a plurality of subscribers by a respective plurality of subscriber drops (typically pre-existing copper twisted pairs). The bandwidth on the fiber, although large, is usually inferior to the total bandwidth that can be transmitted across the subscriber drops. Therefore, both upstream and downstream traffic may become congested at various "choke points" under certain circumstances of usage. Ordinarily, the data is buffered at the choke points, leading to the installation of large queues within each ONU. This solution is not only expensive, but is inadequate since the required queue size is dependent on the maximum transaction size, which has no hard upper bound. In contrast, the present invention provides a traffic shaper located in the HDT, which gives centralized control of the traffic flowing to and from the ONUs. Consideration of the priority and destination of each traffic cell is taken into account by the traffic shaper to ensure that the capacity of the fiber and of the individual drops is never exceeded, irrespective of the transaction sizes, thereby eliminating the need for costly buffers in the outside plant. Any maintenance or repairs of the traffic shaper can be easily effected without field visits, due to its centralized location.

System and Method for Facilitating Managing a Job

An outside Plant Construction Management (OSPCM) system simplifies and mechanizes many aspects of operating a facility, such as a Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC). The OSPCM system performs a configuration function and this data is input to the awarded contract which entails breaking the job into its constituent tasks, sequencing the tasks, prioritizing the tasks, and scheduling the tasks. The OSPCM system completes the scheduling task by assigning the tasks to supervisors and / or to outside contractors. The OSPCM system automatically manages the materials required for tasks by determining what and when it is needed, ordering what is available from within inventory, and ordering necessary materials from outside providers. When a task is completed, the contractor accesses the OSPCM system and marks the task as completed. The OSPCM system then forwards invoices to the voucher system for those cases where work is completed as designed.

Modular heat sinks for housings for electronic equipment

A housing for an outside plant telecommunication equipment (OSP) which uses modular heat sink assemblies. OSP housings contain electronic circuit boards on which are mounted electrical components that generate heat. Thermal conductors or mesas contact the electrical components to conduct heat from the components to the environment. Rather than create single purpose housings with cast thermal conductors, the improved housing uses heat sink plates which can easily be swapped out to accommodate a variety of electronic circuit boards that might be needed within a general purpose housing. Together with faster turnaround time to create a new design for a housing, lower manufacturing and inventory costs result.

Method and system for service-based regulation of traffic flow to customer premises devices

A method of regulating traffic flow to customer premises devices (CPDs) reachable via outside plant units (OPUs). The method comprises receiving first packets in a first traffic category via a first interface, the first packets being destined for respective CPDs; receiving second packets in a second traffic category via a second interface, the second packets being destined for respective CPDs; determining a destination OPU for each of the first and second packets. For each particular OPU that is the destination OPU for one or more packets, the packets are buffered and transmitted via an OPU interface for the particular OPU. The destination OPU for a particular packet is determined by identifying the OPU via which the CPD for which the particular packet is destined is reachable. Packet flow via the OPU interface is regulated by prioritizing transmission of first packets over transmission of second packets.

Distributed digital subscriber line access multiplexer

A distributed DSLAM, which comprises a head end subsystem located within a switching facility and a remote subsystem located outside of the switching facility. The head end subsystem is operative for routing streams of data from a data network to the remote subsystem over a communication link, while the remote subsystem is operative for transmitting over a set of local loops analog signals comprising digitally modulated versions of the data. Separating the routing and modem functionality between inside and outside plant facilities reduces heat dissipation in the outside plant, leading to increased reliability. Flow control can be performed in the upstream and downstream directions by transmitting portions of individual packets and withholding other portions of individual packets. This is done instead of withholding the transmission of entire packets. As a result, the perceived impact on video quality, for example, is lessened.

Embodiments detect issues in an outside plant utilizing a connectivity trail that indicates network elements (NEs) starting at the headend and ending at a distribution tap that serves one or more customer premise devices associated to a customer account. Embodiments determine a failed NE that serves the highest number of customers for which a trouble is reported to a ticketing system. Embodiments avoid reporting downstream child NEs that may be performing poorly due to the upstream failed parent NE. Embodiments associate the one or more customer premise devices, and a customer account with respective NEs of the connectivity trail, perform operational metric tests to determine whether a customer premise device associated with a customer account has failed, determine when an NE of the connectivity trail has failed. Embodiments also include rebooting the failed NE and / or notifying a ticketing system accordingly.

Cable seal apparatus and techniques for outside plant telecommunications housings

Signals entering outside plant (OSP) telecommunications enclosures typically do so through weather tight connectors, with one connector mounted to the enclosure and a mating connector connected to a cable bringing the signals to the OSP housing. Such connectors are expensive and require extensive effort to connect the wires of a cable bundle to the connectors. These problems are avoided by allowing cables pre-installed with a cable seal and pre-terminated to cable connectors to pass through an opening in the wall of an OSP housing and seal the cable bundle to the housing to prevent the ingress of environmental elements into the housing through the opening. This permits easier installation and retrofitting of electronic equipment contained within the housing.
