High specific capacity lithium rich lithium metal oxide materials are coated with inorganic compositions, such as metal fluorides, to improve the performance of the materials as a positive electrode active material. The resulting coated material can exhibit an increased specific capacity, and the material can also exhibit improved cycling. The materials can be formed while maintaining a desired relatively high average voltage such that the materials are suitable for the formation of commercial batteries. Suitable processes are described for the synthesis of the desired coated compositions that can be adapted for commercial production.

A modified alkali silicate composition for forming an inorganic network matrix. The modified alkali silicate matrix is made by reacting an alkali silicate (or its precursors such as an alkali hydroxide, a SiO₂ source and water), an acidic inorganic composition, such as a reactive glass, water and optional fillers, additives and processing aids. An inorganic matrix composite can be prepared by applying a slurry of the modified aqueous alkali silicate composition to a reinforcing medium and applying the temperature and pressure necessary to consolidate the desired form. Organic-inorganic composites were prepared as colloidal particles of a cross-linked, thermally responsive polymer. Hybrid PNIPAM-polysiloxane particles and composite polymeric particles with embedded nanoparticles of an inorganic metal-oxide (MO_x) such as CeO2 and TiO2 were formed. A process for the production of high attrition resistant inorganic compositions is provided. The biomimetic modification method has the advantages that: a unique structure of the titanium dioxide (TiO2) nano-tube is used for building a biomimetic nano calcium-phosphous coating on the surface of the planting body, after the planting body is planted into a human body, on the one hand, the planting body is in a nano-grade structure and can provide contact for osteoplast byssus to promote the adhesion growth of cells, and on the other hand, the calcium-phosphous coating is consistent with inorganic composition of natural bone, so an osteoacusis characteristic can be realized.
