Light-sensitive compounds can be used to identify the product or product packaging. The product or product package may include visible or invisible ink containing a particular light-sensitive compound. The ink may be printed in one or more locations on the product or product packaging to produce an authentication mark, such as a bar code. The device includes an assembly for providing a source of light to irradiate the ink containing the light-sensitive compound on the sample product or product package, an optical detector to detect certain spectral properties emitted or absorbed by the irradiated ink and a controller to determine the authenticity of the sample product or product package by comparing the emitted or absorbed properties to a standard.

Invisible ink jet inks

Water-based invisible red fluorescent inks provide machine-readable, inverse contrast invisible images and can be printed using conventional ink jet printers. The inks employ rare earth complexed ligand fluorophores having narrow excitation and emission spectra. In one embodiment the images are printed with an ink comprising water and a water-soluble organic fluorescent fluorophore, which when printed and dried on paper is invisible to the eye and fluoresces in the green to infrared range, e.g., from about 550 to 1200 nm, when irradiated with short wave length UV radiation, e.g., from 230 nm to 280 nm. The highly specific excitation and emission rates, coupled with a high inverse contrast on papers of all colors, makes them particularly useful as ink jet inks for postal and other purposes.

Latent inkjet formulation and method

A latent or “invisible ink” security marking formulation is provided using a phosphor with distinct emissions characteristics including visible emission due to excitation at a particular invisible wavelength. An insoluble inorganic phosphor with this or a similarly distinct emission characteristic is milled to a small particle size, preferably less than one micron particle diameter, and is combined with a carrier at very low pigment concentration, for example one percent by weight of the ink formulation. Preferably the pigment is cropped to resin particles in a binder. This ink formulation is diluted by a volatile solvent and applied using a conventional inkjet printer of the type used to mark codes on packages and labels. To test for security purposes the printing is irradiated and a response according to the predetermined characteristic is noted (or not noted) to detect security information. The marking is not immediately apparent and without knowledge of the specific phosphor used is difficult for a counterfeiter to reproduce.

Tamper-resistant authentication mark for use in product or product packaging authentication

A method of authenticating products or packaging by analyzing key ingredients on products or on product packaging is disclosed. Light-sensitive compounds can be used to identify the product or product packaging. The product or product package may include visible or invisible ink containing a particular light-sensitive compound. One or more light-sensitive compounds and ink, if used, may be printed in one or more locations on the product or product packaging to produce an authentication mark to inhibit inadvertent or intentional removal of the mark, thereby rendering the mark tamper-resistant. The mark is sealed to isolate the mark from the environment. A device may be used to irradiate the mark and read light absorption or emission. A controller determines the authenticity of the mark by comparing the emitted or absorbed properties to a standard.

Generation of 3D models using stochastic shape distribution

Described herein are a system and methods for generating 3D models using imaging data obtained from an array of camera devices. In embodiments, a stochastic shape distribution may be applied upon an object to be modeled in invisible ink. The system activates a first lighting mode which causes the stochastic shape distribution to be visible and captures a first set of images that depict the stochastic shape distribution on the object. The system then activates a second lighting mode that causes the stochastic shape distribution to be hidden and captures images of the object as it would normally appear (without the stochastic shape distribution). The images having the stochastic shape distribution may be used to determine alignment information for the images within the set of images. That alignment information may then be attributed to the second set of images and used to generate the 3D model.

Identification document with printing that creates moving and three dimensional image effects with pulsed illumination

Identification documents have a three dimensional or moving image effect to enable human verification of their authenticity. These effects are created by printing image layers of invisible inks, such as UV or IR fluorescing inks, each depicting an object in varying position or perspective in an area on the document. When the area is strobed sequentially in different bands corresponding to the different layers, the layers become visible sequentially or simultaneously, creating a moving and / or three dimensional effect.

Real-time auditing of covert data marks

A system and method is provided for the real time auditing of covert data marks. Specific information relating to a product or document is entered into an information cell or shell from a product data file. A high definition, high resolution, high speed inline video system is provided to take specific details from the individual product or document, which details are added to the data cell or shell. Details are then inspected, quality checked, matched in the event there are multiple identifiers (e.g., currency would normally carry two matching sequential numbers), and verified to the product order. This cell or shell is passed to the special design computer / controller through a high speed electronic interface. Information entering the computer / controller is once again verified and matched to the original data as well as the product or document. The cell or shell is converted into a specially created 2-dimensional bar code which is encrypted by the computer / controller and then transformed into a video rip. This video rip is sent to high quality / high resolution production print engines. The encrypted 2-dimensional bar code is imaged directly to the product or document as it is carried past the print imaging engines. The ink also is specially designed and manufactured for this system and process. It is an invisible ink which is unique, durable, permanent and not available commercially (covered under trade secrets). These special inks are well suited for delivery using inkjet technology to efficiently make well formed invisible images at slow to high speed production schemes. The product or document is then sent instantly into a drying scheme (this can be air, forced air, heat, UV Dryer, depending on the printing system selected). After drying there is a final scanning. This scanning equipment is the same scanner design which will be used in the field so that each product or document will be verified with the actual scanning device and programs which will be used in the field. From this final scanning of the 2-dimensional data bar code, a final audited product or document profile is created, as is a database which will be the point of reference in the infrastructure during the life of the product or document. Each time any product or document is scanned at a transaction point, the database will be updated, either in real-time or downloaded from a data collection scanning device. This will build a complete history from the point of manufacture to the moment it is removed from service.

Check fraud prevention method

A method to prevent check fraud and to ensure valid negotiable instrument transactions with the use of randomized alphanumeric and special character sequence passwords or passcodes. Check stock is prepared with either serialized or un-serialized check numbers printed on the check stock. Randomized passcodes are generated, one for each check in the check stock. Each of the randomized passcodes is printed on a single check and correlated to a unique check number. A passcode file listing correlated check numbers and passcodes is prepared. Alternatively, the passcode can be maintained physically separate from the check. When a check is presented for payment, the check number and passcode has to be presented to the payor bank that compares the check number / passcode combination to list in the passcode file. If there is no match, or if the match has occurred before concerning another payment, the check is invalidated. The passcodes may be printed on the checks in invisible ink. If invisible ink is used, payee banks process presented checks to render the invisible passcodes visible before transfer to either a check clearing unit, or a payor bank. Alternatively, two sets of randomized passcodes can be created and used with one passcode printed on a check and correlated to the check number and a second passcode maintained physically separate from the check and delivered separately to the check payee for presentment with the check to seek validation and payment.

Digital-Invisible-Ink Data Hiding Schemes

A novel steganographic approach analogous to the real-world secret communication mechanism, in which messages to be concealed are written on white papers using invisible ink like lemon juice or milk and are revealed only after the papers are heated, is proposed. Carefully designed informed-embedders now play the role of “invisible ink”; some pre-negotiated attacks that can be provided by common content processing tools correspond to required “heating” process. Theoretic models and feasible implementations of the proposed digital-invisible-ink (DII) watermarking approach are provided. The proposed DII watermarking schemes can prevent the supervisor from interpreting secret messages even the watermark extractor, decryption tool, as well as session keys are available to the supervisor. Furthermore, under certain steganographic application scenarios, secret communication systems employing the DII watermarking schemes can aggressively mislead the channel supervisor with fake payloads and transmit genuine secrets at the same time.
