The present invention is related to the delivery of requests for emergency service initially handled by an emergency service call center to a public safety answering point. The invention additionally allows for enhancement information to be provided to a public safety answering point operator visually in connection with calls routed to that public safety answering point. This information may include caller identification, and additional information, such as information regarding the location of the caller and the nature of the emergency. Furthermore, the routing of requests for emergency service to an appropriate public safety answering point can be accomplished for requests received over a wide geographic area. In particular, requests can be appropriately routed even though they may originate from locations encompassed by different E9-1-1 tandems. The present invention is particularly well suited for use in connection with automatic collision notification and personal alarm monitoring call centers serving areas encompassed by more than one E9-1-1 tandem.

The present invention sets forth a network-centric service distribution architecture and method that integrates a wireless access system/service in the residence, SOHO, business or public environment through the use of a local broadband network, such as a Residential-Business Broadband Network (RBN), to the service provider's broadband transport network and to a service provider's broadband packet network that facilitates end-to-end packet telecommunication services. Access functions for connecting said service provider's broadband packet network to the RBN via said service provider's broadband transport network are provided. Call and service termination functions to a plurality of local RBN devices are also provided. Voice signals are also accepted from a plurality of tip/ring interfaces and forwarded to a broadband transport interface for back haul of data and voice packets. A service provider can deploy services in an integrated voice, data and multimedia environment cost-effectively based on one broadband packet network.

A method of negotiating a call capability between signalling points in a telecommunications system. The method comprises sending a capability preference or prioritised list of preferences from an originating signalling point to a terminating signalling point or signalling transfer point, at the Call Control level. A capability acceptance is returned from the terminating signalling point or signalling transfer point to the originating signalling point at the Call Control level, if the terminating signalling point or signalling transfer point accepts a preference sent by the originating signalling point.

The method includes making observations of attributes of radio signals associated with the radio terminal (10) and generating a route for a seeker (20) to find the radio terminal (10), based on the observations and estimated error distributions of those observations. The route may be displayed over a topographical map to guide the seeker to the target.

An Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based distributed virtual tandem switching system is provided in which a network of ATM-based devices is combined to create a distributed virtual tandem switch. The system includes an ATM switching network that dynamically sets up individual switched virtual connections. The system also includes a trunk interworking function (T-IWF) device and a centralized control and signaling interworking function (CS-IWF) device. The trunk interworking function device converts end office voice trunks from TDM channels to ATM cells by employing a structured circuit emulation service. The centralized control and signaling interworking function device performs call control functions and interfaces narrowband signaling and broadband signaling for call processing and control within the ATM switching network. Consequently, the ATM based distributed virtual tandem switching system replaces a standard tandem switch in the PSTN.

This invention provides a novel switch for use in a telecommunications network that is capable of interacting with a voice assisted services server, such as a voice activated dialing (VAD) server. The switch is configured to set-up a calling session between an originating terminal and the VAD server that creates a voice connection between the user at the originating terminal and the VAD server, the voice connection passing through the switch. The VAD server can then in response to a spoken utterance indicative of the party the user wishes to call, generate a transcription of the utterance and extract from a database the telephone number associated with this transcription. The VAD server then formulates a call session redirect message in which is embedded the telephone number of the party the user wishes to call. This call session redirect message is received by the switch and the command implemented such that the call session is redirected toward the desired location. After this procedure is completed, the connection between the switch and the VAD is released. The invention also extends to a novel voice assisted services server capable of remotely effecting call management at a switch based on a spoken utterance conveyed to the voice assisted services server over a voice connection. Further, the invention also extends to methods for operating a switch and a voice assisted services server to implement the above described functionalities. Yet, the invention also extends to a novel method and apparatus to effect billing operations allowing to differentiate for a single call session the part of the call session involving the voice assisted services server and the part following the call session redirect event.

The present invention relates to methods and system for providing telecommunications services, such as call waiting, three-way call, and automatic recall, utilizing a plurality of state machines. Logic specifications define a set of states for each state machine. Each state in turn defines at least one action to be performed in response to a signal received by the state machine. The logic specification for each state machine can be stored, for example, in a textual format in a mark up language, such as HTML, XML, or or other markup language. A compiled representation of the logic specification is generated. Further, a context object tracks a current state of the telecommunication service. The context object accesses the compiled representation in response to an event, e.g., a call progress event, in order to effect a state transition and/or perform an action with respect to the telecommunication service.

A system and method for controlling on a worldwide basis two or more telecommunications networks which are themselves capable of exercising a form of common channel signaling network control. The system uses an architecture in which a destination telecommunications network having common channel signaling control is connected to an originating telecommunications network having common signaling control through a call set up and control methodology which provides ad hoc connection between the two spaced telecommunication networks and common channel signaling networks via an unrelated world wide data network which preferably constitutes the Internet.

The present invention maintains calls during transfers between different types of subsystems, even when there is a bearer path interruption at the user element due to the original connection from the transferring-out subsystem being dropped before the new connection in the transferring-in subsystem is established. The call signaling leg toward the remote endpoint of the remote party is held, while the call signaling leg toward the user element is moved from the transferring-out subsystem to the transferring-in subsystem and a new bearer path is established via the transferring-in subsystem. During transfers with a bearer path interruption, a portion of the bearer path leading to the remote endpoint may be connected to a media resource function, which will provide an announcement to the remote party. Once the user element is accessible in the transferring-in subsystem, the bearer path is further transferred to the user element via the transferring-in subsystem.

A process communication module communicates data among the processes. A redundancy manager controls the processes of the network component in response to mate processes of a mate network component related as a redundant peer with the network component. An operating system interface provides an interface between the processes and an operating system.

Methods and systems for improving trunk utilization for calls to ported numbers are disclosed. A method for improving media trunk utilization for calls directed to ported numbers includes receiving a call setup message associated with the call in a communications network and determining whether the call setup message is directed to a ported number. In response to determining that the call is directed to a ported number, called party information is extracted from the call setup message. A lookup is performed in a number portability database using the called party information to locate a routing number for the called party. A media trunk is selected for the call based on the routing number. The call is then routed through a media gateway associated with the media trunk.

A system for routing Signaling System 7 (SS7) signaling traffic over an Internet Protocol (IP) network includes two or more signaling points, each signaling point capable of sending and receiving SS7 signaling traffic over an SS7 network and a first Signaling Gateway (SG) adapted for receiving SS7 signaling traffic from a first signaling point over the SS7 network. The first SG is configured to convert SS7 signaling traffic into an IP message stream and to route the IP message stream on the IP network to a second SG. The second SG is configured to receive the IP message stream via peer-to-peer IP communications over said IP network with said first SG and to recover the SS7 signaling traffic from the IP message stream. Peer-to-peer communications between the first and second SG is supported by conversion layers within the SG, in the form of an SCTP and M3UA protocols that allows peer IP signaling between the two SGs.

A transport adapter layer interface (TALI) includes messages, processes, and packet structures for sending and receiving SS7 information over a stream-oriented connection, such as a TCP/IP connection. For example, the TALI interface includes test messages for testing the status of a connection and allow and prohibit messages for enabling and disabling service data communications without invoking a TCP handshaking procedure. The invention includes a system for processing telecommunications signaling. Signaling for a call is received into a signaling processor. The signaling processor processes the call and generates new signaling incorporating the processing. The new signaling is transferred to network elements as appropriate. The signaling processor is not coupled to a switch matrix and only communicates with the network elements over signaling links.

A method of reassembling an ordered sequence of Signalling Connection and Control Part (SCCP) message segments at the SCCP of a signalling node of a telecommunications network, where said message segments are received out of order at the signalling node. The method comprises the steps of receiving a first of the message segments at the SCCP and initiating a reassembly process for the sequence to which the received segment belongs. The received segment is stored in a memory as part of said initiated process, and thereafter the remaining segments of the SCCP message are also received and stored in the same memory. The received segments are then concatenated in the correct order to obtain an SCCP user data block. The reassembled SCCP user data block is passed to an SCCP user.

A service gateway (42) includes one or more network adapters (62), configured to capture signaling messages in respective communication networks (28, 50, 56) and to process the signaling messages to generate network signaling primitives indicative of network events in a network-independent format. A call processor (60) is coupled to receive and process the signaling primitives from the network adapters so as to generate service requests for processing by one or more application servers (44, 48, 58), and to receive and process service instructions from the application servers in response to the service requests so as to generate network instruction primitives to the one or more network adapters, causing the network adapters to convey signaling instructions to the respective networks.

Methods and systems for intelligent signaling-router-based surveillance are disclosed. A surveillance and signaling router receives call signaling messages, identifies call signaling messages associated with users under surveillance and determines a surveillance type for the call signaling messages. If the surveillance type is content-related, the surveillance and signaling router forwards the message to a call server. The call server replaces parameters in the message and in subsequent messages so that the call is transparently set up through a media proxy server. The media proxy server copies the media stream to a delivery function. If the surveillance type is non-content-related, the surveillance and signaling router sends a copy of the message or information extracted from the message to an external device.

A method and system for changing the extent of data plane resources controlled by a control plane for a network connection which spans a contiguous set of nodes controlled by existing network control resources is disclosed. This is done in a non-disruptive manner. This typically involves two steps: i) Creating a new set of control plane resources for said network connection such that said data plane resources are shared with said existing network control resources; and ii) then terminating the existing network control resources such that said data plane resources are fully transferred to the new set of control plane resources without disrupting said network connection. The existing network control resources can be either a control plane resource or a non control plane resource. An example of a non control plane resource is network management software (e.g., an OSS (Operation Support System)), which forms part of the Management Plane. It should be noted that this does not need to be done for a complete end-to-end connection, but rather can be executed for the portion of the end-to-end connection which is to be controlled by the control plane.

A telephone system architecture enabling various components of a telephone system to be distributed geographically yet operates as a seamlessly integrated system. A signaling gateway interfaces to the PSTN and through an SS7 interface. The signaling gateway includes a telephony protocol server. At least one other component of the telephone system includes a telephony protocol client. The telephony protocol client and telephony protocol server communicate over an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The telephony protocol server provides access to the PSTN to the component having the telephony protocol client. Any functions in the various components that require an SS7 interface to the PSTN are simply handled through the signaling gateway by the telephony protocol server.
