A process for straightening or relaxing hair comprising the following steps: (a) providing a hair straightening or relaxing composition having a pH ranging from 8 to 11.5, and containing, in a cosmetically acceptable medium, at least one weak acid chosen from monocarboxylic, dicarboxylic and tricarboxylic acids, their salts, and mixtures thereof; (b) contacting the hair with the hair straightening or relaxing composition to form treated hair; and (c) straightening or relaxing the treated hair by applying heat, wherein hydroxide-containing compounds are not used. Disclosed herein is also a preferred hair straightening or relaxing composition.

Compositions, kits, and methods for repairing bonds, for example, disulfide bonds, in hair or on the skin are disclosed. The compositions provide improved conditioning benefit for dry hair or moisturize the skin. The compositions also provide a long lasting moisturized feel and smooth feel to the skin or hair, without feeling greasy. The compositions contain one or more compounds that covalently crosslink at least two thiol groups in the hair or on the skin. Use of the crosslinking compositions prevents reversion of the repaired bonds to their reduced (thiol) state, for at least one week, one month, six months, or one year, after a single application of the composition. A formulation is described for straightening hair comprising alkanoic acids and a diluent, wherein the diluent is advantageously present at greater than 5% by volume, and more preferably greater than 20% by volume. The inventive formulation is acidic and does not use an effective amount of an alkaline hair-straightening agent to perform the hair straightening function. Instead, the step of hair straightening is accomplished by applying the non-alkaline formulation to the hair and then either leaving the formulation in the hair without rinsing or rinsing the formulation out of the hair followed by optional shampooing and/or conditioning. A hair straightening device 1 comprises pair of handles pivotally joined at a hinge 4. The upper handle 2 comprises an upper plate 5 that is selectively heated.
