The average gray level value is further multiplied with a stray light factor to obtain a correction value. The gray level value of each pixel is then subtracted with the correction value, such that the stray light effect can be eliminated.

Then, if there are a plurality of characteristic areas, each of which is characterized by the high frequency in the luminance histogram, a characteristic emphasis circuit (7) performs grayscale extension processing for the plurality of characteristic areas.
