Frequency hopping spread spectrum system with high sensitivity tracking and synchronization for frequency unstable signals

A wireless spread spectrum communication system for transmitting data includes a plurality of end point transmitters and at least one receiver. The end point transmitters transmit data via a frequency hopped spread spectrum signal where the transmitting signal is sent without the benefit of frequency stabilization. The receiver is responsive to the frequency hopping spread spectrum signals and includes a correlator and a signal processor. The correlator samples at least a first portion of a preamble of the signal and correlates the portion of the preamble with a known preamble pattern to determine a probability of correlation. The signal processor applies a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm to the signal in response to the probability of correlation to track a narrowband frequency of the signal based on at least a second portion of the preamble and to decode data encoded within the signal subsequent to the preamble.

Multi-subband frequency hopping communication system and method

The invention provides an adaptive frequency hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) transmission system and method, which efficiently utilizes available transmission bandwidth, whilst providing robustness to jamming techniques in wireless communication systems. The proposed technique operates by transmitting a wide-band signal over multiple, single-carrier, parallel transmission subbands, which may occupy non-contiguous frequency regions. The proposed scheme exhibits significant gain in error rate performance, as compared to a data rate equivalent single-subband system in the presence of signal jamming and / or interference without a reduction in the transmission data rate nor an increase in transmitter power. In addition, the proposed system and method are adaptive and enable more efficient use of the available bandwidth for communicating, thus increasing the overall bandwidth utilization of the system.

Fast synchronization for half duplex digital communications

Half duplex, Frequency Hopped-Spread Spectrum wireless transceivers (102), operating without a central controller, maintain time synchronization with the frequency hopping sequence for a period after transmission of a half duplex signal ceases. The wireless transceiver (102) operates their receivers (308) according to the RF frequency hopping sequence and schedule (200). The wireless transceiver (102) is then able to send a short transmission request to signal that it will start transmitting on the Frequency Hopping schedule (200) of the previously ceased transmission. A wireless transceiver (102) that was either the original transmitter or the original receiver is able to transmit this transmission request. A subset of time slots within the hopping schedule (200) can be optionally assigned to the original transmitter and original receiver to obviate collisions of the transmit request transmissions from both device at the same time.

Dynamic Scrambling Techniques for Reducing Killer Packets in a Wireless Network

Techniques are disclosed in which a parameter used for scrambling packet data is changed. If the initial scrambling of a packet causes a killer packet to be generated, the packet is re-scrambled using a different value for the parameter, so that a killer packet is avoided. In a network that employs frequency-hopping spread spectrum communications, a channel identifier can be employed as an input to the scrambling algorithm. In this implementation, a given packet of data will be transmitted on one channel with a first sequence of bits when it is scrambled, and on another channel with a different sequence of bits. If the scrambled packet for one of these channels results in a killer packet, it is statistically unlikely that it will also be a killer packet when it is re-transmitted on the other channel.

The present invention is directed to a frequency hopping spread spectrum transceiver. The transceiver includes a microcontroller; a transmitter having a voltage controlled oscillator, a direct digital synthesizer, and a power amplifier; and a receiver having an amplifier, a mixer, an IF amplifier, a demodulator, and a data slicer. When transmitting, the transmitter communicates a preamble over a predetermined number of preamble channels, and thereafter communicate groups of data bytes that each comprise a subset of the data message over a predetermined sequence of data channels. When receiving, the receiver investigates the predetermined number of preamble channels to search for the preamble, each of the predetermined number of preamble channels being associated with a predetermined number of data channels in each sequence of data channels. A number of bytes that comprises each group of data bytes is determined in accordance with a number of channels in the sequence of data channels and the predetermined number of times each byte of the data message is to be transmitted.

Frequency selective automatic gain control with dual non-symmetric attack and release times and interference detection feature

A digital signal processing-based receiver architecture performs automatic gain control (AGC) for a frequency hopping spread-spectrum communications receiver that may be subjected to one or more sources of interference or jamming. Rather than set the AGC gain at a fixed, best hoped for value, and then attempt to rely on decoding or interleaving to interpolate lost or degraded data, the present invention, through repeated but aperiodic transitions or hops across a plurality of frequency bins of interest, develops a gain profile for the plurality of frequency bins, and uses the gain profile to adjust, on a hop-by-hop basis, the gain for the channel / bin to which the receiver is listening, so as to maintain the average aggregate input signal power at an optimal ADC loading factor.

Communications systems and methods for remotely controlled vehicles

A remote controller and a remotely controlled vehicle employ, at least in part, frequency hopping spread spectrum communications to communicate information between them. The remote controller transmits information for controlling the remotely controlled vehicle on substantially all of the frequencies of a hop sequence established by the two devices, but only transmits information indicative of the established communications between the devices on a subset of the frequencies of the sequence, the subset of frequencies comprising less than substantially all of the frequencies of the sequence. Additionally, the remote controller continues to transmit the information for controlling the remotely controlled vehicle on substantially all of the frequencies of the sequence even if the remotely controlled vehicle loses communication with the remote controller. A mathematical function is applied to identifiers associated with each device to generate an identifier representative of the established communications link between them.

Multiuser detection aided multiple access differential frequency-hopped spread spectrum

Techniques for multiple access differential frequency-hopped spread spectrum (MA-DFHSS) aided by multiuser detection (MUD) are disclosed. An initial DFH decoding is performed to provide data estimates for each user represented in a received co-channel signal. Interference cancellation is then performed using MUD, thereby providing an interference-cancelled signal. Data estimates remaining are then re-decoded. Iteration on the interference cancellation and re-decoding can be carried out to satisfy a particular rule of iteration, although iteration is not always necessary. The final decoded signal can then be provided to its destination.
