Anticollision protocol with fast read request and additional schemes for reading multiple transponders in an RFID system

Arbitration of multiple transponders, such as RFID tags, occurs in an interrogation field. The arbitration process is custom-tailored for individual applications, under software control, by the transponder reader or tag reader. Different wake-up slots are calculated for each tag during successive transmission cycles based upon the tag ID and the transmission cycle number. The tag reader may send a special fast read command to the tag which includes a read request and communications control parameters including the number of time slots for transponder communications, the number of transmissions that an individual transponder is allowed to issue, and the data rate at which the reader communicates to the transponder. The tag reader may also send a special command to a tag to read its data and cause the tag to become decoupled from the environment. Additional schemes are provided to halve the number of active tags in each transmission cycle and to selectively inactivate designated groupings of tag, thereby improving discrimination of the tags in the interrogation field. The tags may be selectively placed in either a tag-talk-first mode or a reader-talk-first mode.

Method and apparatus for interferometry

A method and an arrangement are provided for scalable confocal interferometry for distance measurement, for 3-D detection of an object, for OC tomography with an object imaging interferometer and at least one light source. The interferometer has an optical path difference not equal to zero at each optically detected object element. Thus, the maxima of a sinusoidal frequency wavelet, associated with each detected object element, each have a frequency difference Δf_Objekt. At least one spectrally integrally detecting, rastered detector is arranged to record the object. The light source preferably has a frequency comb, and the frequency comb differences Δf_Quelle are changed in a predefined manner over time in a scan during measuring. In the process, the frequency differences Δf_Quelle are made equal to the frequency difference Δf_Objekt or equal to an integer multiple of the frequency differences Δf_Objekt at least once for each object element.

Method and apparatus for accelerating data access operations in a database system

Data access operations in a database system may be accelerated by allowing the memory cache to be supplemented with a disk cache. The disk cache can store data that isn't able to fit in the memory cache and, since it doesn't contain the primary copy of the data for the database, may organize the data in such a way that the data is able to be streamed from the disks in response to data read operations. The reduced number of read data operations allows the data to be read from the disk cache faster than it could be served from the primary storage facilities, which might not allow the data to be organized in the same manner. The cache hit ratio may be increased by compressing data prior to storing it in the cache. Additionally, where a particular portion of data stored on the disk cache is being used heavily, that portion may be pulled into memory cache to accelerate access to that portion of data.

Capacitance touch slider

A device for detecting the position of a human finger or other object on a touch-sensitive scrolling pad. Dual independent oscillators may be used to generate two pulse trains at frequencies dependent upon the capacitance of two conductors resulting from the position of the finger on the conductors. The pulses from each oscillator may be counted over a time interval. A ratio-metric measurement may be taken by calculating the ratio of the two counts, and a sum may also be calculated. The ratio of the two counts relates to finger position on the device, and their sum relates to finger pressure upon the device.

System and method for utilizing a mobile device to obtain a balance on a financial transaction instrument

The balance of funds remaining for a stored-value card (“SVC”) may easily be determined without going through an actual purchase transaction with the SVC. The balance is obtained wirelessly from a server storing information pertaining to SVCs, and may be provided in a discreet manner. A card reader adds a card security code to a card number read from the SVC, and encrypts the card number and the CSC. The encrypted information is wirelessly sent to a cellular telephone. The cellular telephone decrypts the encrypted information and wirelessly transmits a balance-information request, which includes the card number and the CSC, to the server. The server receives the request and wirelessly sends the requested balance information to the cellular telephone and, in turn, the cellular telephone wirelessly sends the requested balance information to the card reader, which provides the information to the requester.

Caching data in a high performance zone of a data storage system

A combination of a host system and a storage system is disclosed that facilitates improved responsiveness of the host system to user requests. In one embodiment, the host system includes a cache management module, a partitioning module, and a driver. The cache management module determines write data to cache to a dedicated zone of a hard disk media of the storage system. The partitioning module partitions the hard disk media into one partition including the dedicated zone and another partition not including the dedicated zone. The driver transmits storage access commands to the storage system to cache data in and retrieve cached data from the one partition. Thereby, the host system can access the write data from the hard disk media more quickly than if the write data were cached in and accessed from another zone of the hard disk media.

Two-photon, three-or four-dimensional, color radiation memory

InactiveUS6483735B1Large storageEasy to getNanoinformaticsRecording involving hole burningDetector arrayPrism
Three-, and four-dimensional ("3-D" and "4-D") volume radiation memories store multiple binary bits of information-typically about five to ten and more typically eight such bits-in the same physical volumes on several different photochromic chemicals co-located in the volume. Each of the multiple photochromic chemicals is individually selectively written with an individually associated pair of radiation beams of an appropriate combined frequency-i.e., a "color"-and energy by a process of two-photon ("2-P") absorption. All the multiple information bits that are stored within all the photochromic chemicals in each addressable domain are read in common, and induced to simultaneously fluoresce, again by process of 2-P absorption. The fluorescence of each of different photochromic chemical in each addressed domain-which fluorescence is selective in accordance with the written state of each such photochromic chemical-is separated from, and is separately detected from, the fluorescence of all other photochromic chemicals because it is of a unique color, and is spatially steered to an associated detector array, normally a Charge Coupled Device (CCD), by a monochromator, normally a prism. Exemplary fluorescent photochromic chemicals are spirobenzopyran, rhodamine, cumarin and anthracene. Suitable groups of photochromic chemicals are formed from individual photochromic chemicals exhibiting narrow, sharp, separate spectra of absorption and of emission suitably distinct from each other, and where no chemical's fluorescent emission energy overlaps the absorption energies of any other chemicals.

Non-volatile storage device

A non-volatile storage device (1) has non-volatile memory units (FARY0 to FARY3), buffer units (BMRY0 to BMRY3) and a control unit (CNT), and the control unit can control a first access processing between an outside and the buffer unit and a second access processing between the non-volatile memory unit and the buffer unit upon receipt of directives from the outside separately from each other.
