A liquid sampling device and method is provided, comprising the collection of a sample of bodily fluid, such as blood, without intervention of a medically trained individual. The bodily fluid sampling device advantageously comprises an isolating cap or envelope adapted to slide over the sample container to prolong the transport time as much as possible. In one embodiment, the isolating cap or envelope is manually set in place by the user according to written operating instructions provided with the device via a user actuated tab, or is automatically slid into place by a second mechanism optionally triggered by thermal contraction of an element after the device has reached a sufficiently low temperature in a refrigerator. The bodily fluid sampling device is optionally equipped with a unique identification code and carries an electronically readable identification tag. Depending on the environment, the sampling device is optionally equipped with geolocation and remote communication capabilities to enable collection after the sampling process has been performed without further action by the user. Advantageously, the bodily fluid sampling device according to the invention is optionally configured to use a standard analysis tube well known in the industry, enabling analysis of the contents of the tube on standard automated analysis equipment. Associated methods are provided for collecting a sample of bodily fluid using such a sampling device and ensuring the sealed transport of the collected sample of bodily fluid to an analysis laboratory.
