Alternatively, the storage system can also generate a first set of metadata associated with a first set of stored data, generate a second set of stored data which is a copy of the first set of stored data, generate a second set of metadata associated with the second set of stored data, and compare the first set of metadata and the second set of metadata.

A flash-based data archive storage system having a large capacity storage array constructed from a plurality of dense flash devices is provided. The flash devices are illustratively multi-level cell (MLC) flash devices that are tightly packaged to provide a low-power, high-performance data archive system having substantially more capacity per cubic inch than more dense tape or disk drives. The flash-based data archive system may be adapted to employ conventional data de-duplication and compression methods to compactly store data. A file protection scheme for fixed content in a distributed data archive uses computations that leverage permutation operators of a cyclic code. In an illustrative embodiment, an N+K coding technique is described for use to protect data that is being distributed in a redundant array of independent nodes (RAIN). According to the invention, the data to be distributed is encoded by a dispersal operation that uses a group of permutation ring operators. The job scheduler models a flow network that represents data content, software programs, physical devices, and communication capacity of the archive management system in various levels of vertices according to the received inputs. An optimal path in the modeled flow network is computed as an initial schedule, and the archive management system performs tasks according to the initial schedule. Some embodiments of the invention archive and unarchive objects that have global and user settings in multi-user environments. To archive objects, these embodiments identify which object settings are global settings and which settings are user settings. They store the global settings in an archive, and then store the user settings in another archive. To unarchive each object, some embodiments identify the object's settings in one or both archives. These embodiments instantiate the object, and retrieve its settings from the data archives and use the retrieved settings to define the values of the settings of the instantiated object. Some embodiments use key-value coding techniques to retrieve values and load values in an object. Key-value coding allows an archiving or unarchiving process to retrieve and load setting values for an object by using the setting names.
