Methods and apparatus for providing uninterruptible power are provided by aspects of the invention. One aspect is more particularly directed to an uninterruptible power supply for providing power to a load. The uninterruptible power supply includes an input to receive input power, an output to provide output power, a back-up power source coupled to the output to provide backup power at the output, a contactor coupled to the input and having an open state and a closed state, a contactor control circuit having an output coupled to the contactor to provide an output voltage to control an operational state of the contactor, the contactor control circuit being configured to provide an output voltage having a first voltage level to the contactor to control the contactor to switch from the open state to the closed state and to provide a second output voltage having a second voltage level to maintain the contactor in the closed state.

If the virtual master is failed, other UPS modules will initiate the role detection and master arbitration to re-elect a new virtual master. Parallel operation is accomplished without any external controller; the system can be operated with only one UPS module; distribution of adequate resource to each module is properly arranged, thus the risks of system-level single-point failure are much reduced.

A system and method for controlling a vehicle-based source of uninterruptable power is disclosed. The vehicle-based UPS includes an energy storage system located on-board a vehicle and configured to generate DC power transferable to an external load, and an DC-AC inverter connected to the on-board energy storage system to receive the DC power therefrom and invert the DC power to an AC power useable by the external load. The vehicle-based UPS also includes a charging device located on-board the vehicle and connected to the on-board energy storage system to provide recharging power thereto and a control system. The control system is configured to determine one of a state-of-charge (SOC) and a voltage of the energy storage system and selectively operate the charging device to provide the recharging power to the energy storage system to maintain the SOC or voltage of the energy storage system within a pre-determined range.

A single stage, single switch, input-output isolated converter configuration which uses a hybrid combination of forward and flyback converters is disclosed. The converter operates at a high input power factor with a regulated DC output voltage. It makes use of a novel control scheme utilizing duty cycle control at two discrete operating frequencies. Although the invention employs two frequencies, it does not use a continuous frequency variation.
