Secure platform management with power savings capacity

An electronic device, for example, a laptop computer includes a processor, a transceiver module, for example, a Bluetooth module and a memory. The memory includes a platform proximity agent, which may be implemented as a series of instructions, which when executed by the processor, causes the processor to receive a Bluetooth signal from a corresponding provisioned Bluetooth device, for example, a cellular telephone. Next, determine whether the received signal exceeds both a strength threshold level and a predetermined time threshold level, where the signal strength and time threshold levels are established when the laptop and a corresponding cell phone are paired during a provisioning process. When the received signal strength and duration both exceed the corresponding policy based thresholds, the laptop enters (or remains in) a full power state with full access to the monitor and the platform. On the other hand, when the received signal strength and duration both fall below (or are less than) the corresponding policy based threshold, the laptop enters (or remains in) a reduced power, or locked state.

System and method for selective memory module power management

A memory module includes a memory hub that monitors utilization of the memory module and directs devices of the memory module to a reduced power state when the module is not being used at a desired level. System utilization of the memory module is monitored by tracking system usage, manifested by read and write commands issued to the memory module, or by measuring temperature changes indicating a level of device activity beyond normal refresh activity. Alternatively, measured activity levels can be transmitted over a system bus to a centralized power management controller which, responsive to the activity level packets transmitted by remote memory modules, direct devices of those remote memory modules to a reduced power state. The centralized power management controller could be disposed on a master memory module or in a memory or system controller.

Active Wireless Tag And Auxiliary Device For Use With Monitoring Center For Tracking Individuals or Objects

The invention is directed to a location tracking device and auxiliary device for use with a monitoring center for tracking individuals or objects. The location tracking device has position determining circuitry and first wireless circuitry that communicates position data representative of the location of the tracking device to a remote location (e.g., a monitoring station). The tracking device also has second wireless circuitry that communicates with the auxiliary device. The tracking device has at least two operational modes. The tracking device switches operational modes when communication is established between the tracking device and the auxiliary device. The auxiliary device generally has an associated auxiliary device ID and wireless circuitry that communicates the auxiliary device ID to the location tracking device. The tracking device has a first operational mode, when communication is not established with the auxiliary device, wherein the position determining circuitry is maintained in a normal power state. The tracking device can also have a second operational mode, when communication is established between the tracking device and the auxiliary device. In the second operational mode, the second wireless circuitry receives the auxiliary device ID from the auxiliary device and the first wireless circuitry communicates the auxiliary device ID to the remote location. The tracking device can also have a third operational mode, when communication is established between the tracking device and the auxiliary device. In the third operational mode, the position determining circuitry is placed in a reduced power state.

System and Method for Adaptive Information Handling System Power Management

Information handling system power management in standby and hibernate states is adapted to reduce transition times for end user requests to resume to an operational state. During fast resume time periods, transitions to the hibernate state are limited so that recovery to an operational states has the reduced resume time associated with the standby state. The fast resume time periods are set by user preference or automatically set by monitoring end user interactions with the information handling system to predict fast resume times appropriate for the end user. In one embodiment, a power manager automatically transitions the information handling system from the hibernate state to a standby state a predetermined time period before a fast resume period begins.

System power management based on motion detection

A power management component in a computer system includes an imaging device operatively connected to a computer. When the computer has entered a low power state, the imaging device can continue to operate to detect motion in its field of view. When “enough” motion is detected, the imaging device can signal the computer in a manner as to transition the computer to a full power state. In another aspect of the present invention, the imaging device can determine that there has been insufficient motion for a predetermined period of time and initiate a transition of the computer to a low power state.

System and Method for Managing Power Consumption of an Information Handling System

An AC-to-DC power adapter provides DC power to an information handling system at a first higher DC voltage or a second lower DC voltage based upon a power state of the information handling system. For example, approximately 19 Volts DC power is provided if the information handling system is in an on state or if the information handling system is charging a battery. Approximately 13 Volts DC power is provided if the information handling system is in a reduced power state, such as an ACPI S3 state, with a battery having a substantially full charge.

System and Method for Information Handling System Storage Device Power Consumption Management

A storage device, such as a hard disk drive or solid state drive, reduces energy consumption by entering a reduced power state after an inactivity time where the inactivity time is set based upon I / O commands received at the storage device. For example, where commands received at a storage device are characterized in a predetermined way in terms of read commands, such as a last received command as a read command or a ratio of read commands versus write commands, a first inactivity time is applied, while commands characterized in a predetermined way in terms of write commands have a second inactivity time applied. Using a greater inactivity time during read activities than during write activities provides improved performance with reduced power consumption.

System and method for communicating command parameters between a processor and a memory flow controller

A system and method for communicating command parameters between a processor and a memory flow controller are provided. The system and method make use of a channel interface as the primary mechanism for communicating between the processor and a memory flow controller. The channel interface provides channels for communicating with processor facilities, memory flow control facilities, machine state registers, and external processor interrupt facilities, for example. These channels may be designated as blocking or non-blocking. With blocking channels, when no data is available to be read from the corresponding registers, or there is no space available to write to the corresponding registers, the processor is placed in a low power “stall” state. The processor is automatically awakened, via communication across the blocking channel, when data becomes available or space is freed. Thus, the channels of the present invention permit the processor to stay in a low power state.
