109 results about "Degree of certainty" patented technology

The term "degrees of certainty" is used to describe how close we are to being certain. Certainty, though, is the upper limit. It is the state where no more doubts exist.

System and method for a cooperative conversational voice user interface

A cooperative conversational voice user interface is provided. The cooperative conversational voice user interface may build upon short-term and long-term shared knowledge to generate one or more explicit and / or implicit hypotheses about an intent of a user utterance. The hypotheses may be ranked based on varying degrees of certainty, and an adaptive response may be generated for the user. Responses may be worded based on the degrees of certainty and to frame an appropriate domain for a subsequent utterance. In one implementation, misrecognitions may be tolerated, and conversational course may be corrected based on subsequent utterances and / or responses.

Highlighting icons for search results

The present invention provides a search capability to allow a user to easily locate a preference control, file, folder, control, or other system resource or data item associated with a search result. In one embodiment, a user enters a search term (or a portion thereof) in a search field associated with one or more resource types that may be searched. The user may be presented with a pop-up menu containing a list of likely matches. The user selects the desired preference control from the pop-up menu, and the corresponding preference pane, or other container, containing the selected data item, control, or other resource is displayed. In one aspect, as the user enters the search term (or portion thereof), certain icons are highlighted. Specifically, those icons that represent containers containing matching data items (such as preference panes having controls that match the search term) are highlighted. Different types of highlighting can be used depending on the degree of certainty as to which container is likely to contain the correct match.

Audio renderings for expressing non-audio nuances

Methods, systems, computer program products, and methods of doing business by adapting audio renderings of non-audio messages (for example, e-mail messages that are processed by a text-to-speech translator) to reflect various nuances of the non-audio information. Audio cues are provided for this purpose, which are sounds that are “mixed” in with the audio rendering as a separate (background) audio stream. Audio cues may reflect information such as the topical structure of a text file, or changes in paragraphs. Or, audio cues may be used to signal nuances such as changes in the color or font of the source text. Audio cues may also be advantageously used to reflect information about the translation process with which the audio rendering of a text file was created, such as using varying background tones to convey the degree of certainty in the accuracy of translating text to audio using a text-to-speech translation system, or of translating audio to text using a voice recognition system, or of translating between languages, and so forth. Stylesheets, such as those encoded in the Extensible Stylesheet Language (“XSL”), may optionally be used to customize the audio cues. For example, a user-specific stylesheet customization may be performed to override system-wide default audio cues for a particular user, enabling her to hear a different background sound for messages on a particular topic than other users will hear.

Operation of trusted state in computing platform

A computing entity comprises a trusted monitoring component having a first processing means and a first memory means, the trusted monitoring component being a self-contained autonomous data processing unit, and a computer platform having a main processing means and a main memory area, along with a plurality of associated physical and logical resources such as peripheral devices including printers, modems, application programs, operating systems and the like. The computer platform is capable of entering a plurality of different states of operation, each state of operation having a different level of security and trustworthiness. Selected ones of the states comprise trusted states in which a user can enter sensitive confidential information with a high degree of certainty that the computer platform has not been compromised by external influences such as viruses, hackers or hostile attacks. To enter a trusted state, references made automatically to the trusted component, and to exit a trusted state reference must be made to the trusted component. On exiting the trusted state, all references to the trusted state are deleted from the computer platform. On entering the trusted state, the state is entered in a reproducible and known manner, having a reproducible and known configuration which is confirmed by the trusted component.

Systems and methods for embedding media forensic identification markings

The present invention leverages a series of media watermark locations to provide information relating to media ownership and / or distribution source. This provides a forensic means to establish a source of media with a high degree of certainty despite malicious and / or non-malicious attacks. By providing embedded user unique identification, a source of copied media can be determined without the embedded information substantially interfering with the intended purpose of the media itself. In one instance of the present invention, digital media is transformed into an N-dimensional media signal. User unique keys are then utilized along with a master key to determine locations for embedding a watermark signal that possesses substantially similar quantized statistics as the transformed media signal. The watermark signal is then embedded into the media signal, fingerprinting the media.

Vein scanner

A portable vein viewer apparatus may be battery powered and hand-held to reveal patient vasculature information to aid in venipuncture processes. The apparatus comprises a first laser diode emitting infrared light, and a second laser diode emitting only visible wavelengths, wherein vasculature absorbs a portion of the infrared light causing reflection of a contrasted infrared image. A pair of silicon PIN photodiodes, responsive to the contrasted infrared image, causes transmission of a corresponding signal. The signal is processed through circuitry to amplify, sum, and filter the outputted signals, and with the use of an image processing algorithm, the contrasted image is projected onto the patient's skin surface using the second laser diode. Revealed information may comprise vein location, depth, diameter, and degree of certainty of vein locations. Projection of vein images may be a positive or a negative image. Venipuncture needles may be coated to provide visibility in projected images.

Monte carlo simulation of well logging data

A system and method identify hydrocarbon productive reservoir zones using Monte Carlo numerical analysis to account for uncertainties in log measurements and petrophysical parameters. Random errors in logging tool responses and core measurements, as well as reservoir heterogeneity, are incorporated in a Monte Carlo simulation to output appropriate petrophysical models to calculate statistical distributions for saturation and permeability to define productive zones, non-productive zones and zones of undetermined productivity as a basis of deciding whether additional logging, core sampling or well test data are needed to reclassify the undetermined zones as either productive or non-productive. As uncertainties are quantified in the analysis, the degree of certainty in determining productive and non-productive zones is known and can be used to decide whether to further test, stimulate or abandon reservoir zones.

Centralized islanding protection for distributed renewable energy generators

A device and method is disclosed for providing anti-islanding protection for an electrical grid-tied power converter, which is autonomous to the operation of the power converter. The device can protect any number of paralleled power converters and can independently determine if an islanding condition exists. The method involves actively perturbing the electrical grid at a common point of coupling between converter and grid, observing the effect of the perturbation, comparing the perturbed and non-perturbed grid characteristics and disconnecting the converter from the grid if a run-on or islanding condition is indicated. Perturbation is accomplished switching a reactive load or loads onto the grid or by changing a transformer tap connection at the point of common coupling. The invention is targeted for use in solar photovoltaic power plants which have a number of distributed DC-to-AC power converters. The invention eliminates the interaction of anti-islanding algorithms between multiple power converters, determines islanding conditions with a greater degree of certainty, reduces current distortion over prior art anti-islanding methods and provides a least-cost anti-islanding solution for systems with distributed power converters.

Method of using virtual gantries to optimize the charging performance of in-vehicle parking systems

A method is provided for charging a user for parking a vehicle in a chargeable parking facility. Signals are received from at least one signal source at a receiver disposed within the vehicle. Using the received signals, an approximate path of travel of the vehicle is identified and it is determined whether the vehicle's approximate path of travel crosses a geofence associated with at least one boundary region of the chargeable parking facility. If the vehicle's approximate path of travel crosses the geofence, it is determined, with a degree of certainty, whether a park point approximating a location where the vehicle has come to rest lies inside the chargeable parking facility. If the park point is determined to lie inside the chargeable parking facility, the park point is associated with a charge, and the charge is assessed to the user.
