The terminals are configured to display data, and to send keyboard, cursor, audio, and video data through the network to the processing server. Functionality is partitioned so that databases, server and graphical user interface functions are provided by the services, and human interface functionality is provided by the terminal. Communication with the terminals from various services is accomplished by converting disparate output to a common protocol. Appropriate drivers are provided for each service to allow protocol conversion. Multiple terminals are coupled to the network. Users can enable their unique session at any one of the terminals by inserting a “smart card” into a card reader. Removing the card disables the session. Re-inserting the card into the same or any other terminal re-enables the session.

Method and apparatus for measuring stream availability, quality and performance

A streaming measurement agent designed to experience, measure, and report on a media stream as an actual end user would experience the stream. Preferably, agent resides transparently within a streaming media player itself so that it can monitor stream packet flows within the player as the measured streams are being played. In an illustrative embodiment, the agent comprises a performance monitoring module (PMM), which is software that resides in an interface between an existing core module and a renderer of a media player. The agent PMM intercepts each useful packet as it goes from the core to the renderer and, as a result, it is able to compute quality metrics about the playback. The agent functions “transparently” to the media player by presenting the core with an application programming interface (API) that emulates the API that the renderer normally presents to the core. Thus, when the core believes it is calling the renderer, it is actually calling the agent PMM, which can then receive all the packets from the core and process them. After computing relevant performance metrics using the packets it receives, the agent PMM calls the renderer. A set of performance agents can be managed by a service provider to enable a content provider to determine how a stream is perceived by end users.

The parallel storage server comprises (a) a server interface processor interfacing the storage system with a host computer, with a network or with a parallel computing system; (b) an array of disk nodes, each disk node being composed by one processor electrically connected to at least one disk and (c) an interconnection network for connecting the server interface processor with the array of disk nodes. Multi-dimensional data files such as 3-d images (for example tomographic images), respectively 2-d images (for example scanned aerial photographs) are segmented into 3-d, respectively 2-d file extents, extents being striped onto different disks. One-dimensional files are segmented into 1-d file extents. File extents of a given file may have a fixed or a variable size. The storage server is based on a parallel image and multiple media file storage system. This file storage system includes a file server process which receives from the high level storage server process file creation, file opening, file closing and file deleting commands. It further includes extent serving processes running on disk node processors, which receive from the file server process commands to update directory entries and to open existing files and from the storage interface server process commands to read data from a file or to write data into a file. It also includes operation processes responsible for applying in parallel geometric transformations and image processing operations to data read from the disks and a redundancy file creation process responsible for creating redundant parity extent files for selected data files.

A system and method for a process attribute based computer network filter assigns a process attribute to a process executing on a computing device and assigns a network attribute to a network interface card (NIC) associated with the computing device. When the process desires to send a communication packet to another process on a different computing device over a network to which the NIC is connected, the process sends an application program interface (API) system call to the NIC. The API call is intercepted by a system call trap handler, which, in cooperation with a session filter driver and a network filter driver, determines the process attribute associated with the process and the network attribute associated with the NIC. If the session filter driver and the network filter driver, in cooperation with the system call trap handler, determine that the process attribute and the network attribute correspond, then the communication packet is allowed to pass to the network. Similarly, a packet received over the network is processed by the session filter driver and the network filter driver to determine whether the packet can pass to the process to which the received packet is destined.
