A system and method for generating a schedule for multiple employees in a complex environment. In one embodiment, the method includes generating a schedule for multiple employees with varying skill sets for a time period, wherein the plurality of employees have varying overlapping skill sets that enable them to perform various tasks, and wherein employees are shared across tasks within the time period. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving a plurality of user inputs to a scheduling program, including a number of employee designations that each refer to a unique employee, and a number of skill sets that each correspond to one of the employee designations. The method further includes receiving a user input that changes the number of employee designations by indicating at least one changed employee, and estimating an effect of the at least one changed employee on effective staffing levels for each of the various tasks. The invention relates to a method for synchronization in networks, whereby the local time (t_loc) which is valid at the particular node, is updated at different nodes. For that purpose, timing messages are regularly transmitted by a freely selectable superior node (N1; N3; N6) and only by a superior node to an inferior node N2, N3; N4-N6; N7), which receives the timing messages M1-M8) and analyzes said messages for updating the local time (t_loc) thereof. A minimum propagation time (d_min) is determined for a timing message (M1-M8) between an inferior node (N1;N3;N6) and a superior node (N2, N3; N4-N6; N7). When the inferior node (N2, N3; N4-N6; N7) receives a timing message (M1-M8), said inferior node extracts the local time of the superior node (N1; N3), which is contained in said timing message (M1-M8) and adds the minimum propagation time (d_min) thereto, in order to generate a reference time (t_comp,1-t_comp,8). Said reference time (t_comp,1-t_comp,8) is then compared with the proper local time (t_loc). If the reference time is retarded in relation to the proper local time (t_loc), said proper local time (t_loc) is not updated. If said reference time is advanced in relation to the proper local time (t_loc).

A method for automated container terminal scheduling is disclosed. The method comprises reorganizing a container terminal when resources are available and determining a container carrier plan for each container to be loaded from the container terminal. The method further comprises determining from the container carrier plan a mover schedule for a mover to move a first container to be loaded from the container terminal to a container carrier crane which loads the first container to the container carrier and determining from the mover schedule an individual stack crane schedule which loads the mover with the first container to be loaded from the container terminal.

In one embodiment, the canonical schemas are used by database tables. In another embodiment, they are used by the physical files which persist data from those tables. Temporal metadata is used to express temporal requirements. Thus, uni-temporal, bitemporal, and temporally-enabled non-temporal tables can be generated without altering existing data models or designing temporal features into new data models. Support is also provided for managing temporal data that exists in future assertion time, and for using episodes to enforce temporal referential integrity.
