Method for ignition of flameless combustor

A combustor method and apparatus is provided. The method utilizes flameless combustion with one or more of three improvements to enhance ignition of the flameless combustor. A catalytic surface can be provided within a combustion chamber to provide flameless combustion at least in the vicinity of the catalytic surface at a temperature that is much lower than the autoignition temperature of fuel in air without the presence of the catalytic surface. Nitrous oxide or supplemental oxygen may also be used as an oxidant either instead of air or with air to reduce ignition temperatures. Further, electrical energy can be passed through the fuel conduit, raising the temperature of the conduit to a temperature above which the fuel will ignite when combined with the oxidant.

Portable combustion device utilizing thermoelectrical generation

This invention provides a portable combustion device that provides a cleaner combustion, reduces the kindling period, and provides a more efficient overall combustion through the use of a fan that directs a predetermined volume of airflow over the combustible fuel—typically wood or similar cellulose-based biological solids. The combustion device has a combustion chamber into which the fuel source is placed for combustion. Mounted to the side of the combustion chamber is a housing that encloses the TEG, which generates an electrical output based on a difference in temperature on opposing sides. Mounted onto the TEG housing and protruding into the combustion chamber through a small passageway is a heat-conducting probe and heat-conducting probe base unit. The opposing side of the TEG is also in contact with a heat sink to remove heat from the TEG device through interaction with ambient air that passes over the vanes from a port located along the side of the TEG housing. A motor and fan near the heat sink to draw air away the heat sink and aid in the cooling of the heat sink, and force air onto the combusting fuel through a plurality of peripheral ports that connect with an air space located between the inner and outer walls of the combustion chamber.

Gas burner

What is shown is an improved gas burner assembly that is easily adapted to attach to a range top or cooktop, or the floor of the range and can draw air from either above the range top level by external vents or from below range top level through an open style mixing cup. The improved gas burner assembly uses a plurality of flame rings providing the user a wide variety of temperature settings starting from a low intensity simmer to high intensity cooking heat. A gas transfer channel provides a sustaining ignition source. The gas transfer channel has sustaining flame buttons interior to the burner body, and provides the initial ignition for the main flame rings. The gas transfer channel additionally has slots that provide additional sustaining flames for the main flame rings located on the exterior of the burner body. The improved gas burner assembly additionally uses a cover plate of transparent or translucent, heat proof material that allows the user to observe the interior of the burner to which flame rings have ignited. The cover plate also transfers heat from the internal flame rings to the cooking utensil imparting a more uniform transfer of heat to the cooking utensil.

Micro-Pilot For Gas Appliance

A micro pilot for a gas hot water heater is provided. The micro pilot provides a flame that is substantially smaller than a typical pilot in a hot water heater during standby operation of the burner. Just prior to allowing gas to flow to the burner upon a call for heat, a pilot flame of sufficient size to ensure ignition of the burner is provided. In one embodiment this larger pilot flame is produced by providing an additional amount of bleed gas to the pilot to increase flame size. In another embodiment, bleed gas is provided to a separate booster pilot, which is ignited by the micro pilot. The flame from the booster pilot is then used to ignite the main burner. This design allows for the micro pilot to be positioned closer to the flame trap of a flammable vapor resistant hot water heater to ensure smooth ignition of any such vapor.

Automatic gaslight igniter/controller and burners

A method and apparatus is defined for automatically igniting and controlling a gaslight to turn ON the gaslight in the evening and turn OFF the gaslight in the morning or alternatively, using a switch or timer to turn the gaslight on and off. The gaslight may be either a mantle type burner or an open flame type burner. The igniter consists of a high voltage spark generator that is controlled by a microcontroller to enable the spark when the microcontroller senses that darkness has occurred or a preset time of day has occurred. The spark is generated across a spark probe gap that is positioned in an optimum location to ignite the gas / air mixture. We and others have been manufacturing gaslight igniters for several years and this patent pertains to recent concepts and implementations that greatly improve the automatic igniter / burner utility and operation. The physical parameters of the device are also important. The device is sized so that it will fit easily inside of a 3-inch lamppost, or install easily within most gas lamp heads. The device is flexible in configuration to allow the burner / probe to be oriented axially with the igniter, or oriented perpendicular to the igniter to provide great flexibility in using the igniter with various burners and gas light heads. Quick disconnect fittings for gas and low voltage electric make the igniter / burner assembly easy to change without tools, similar to changing a light bulb.
