Apparatus and method for identifying optimal PEEP

A ventilator for ventilating a patient also assists a clinician in determining a suitable PEEP for the patient. For this purpose, a graph or tabular display of a series of different value PEEPs and corresponding functional residual capacities of the patient may be provided. Or, the amount of the lung volume recruited / de-recruited at various levels of PEEP may be determined for use in selecting a desired PEEP. To this end, the functional residual capacity of the lungs is determined for a first PEEP level. The PEEP is then altered to a second level and a spirometry dynostatic curve of lung volume and pressure data is obtained. The lung volume on the dynostatic curve at a lung pressure corresponding to the first PEEP value is obtained. The difference between the functional residual capacity of the lungs at the first PEEP level and that determined from the dynostatic curve represents the lung volume recruited / de-recruited when changing between said first and second PEEPs.

Accessing data values in a cache

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for accessing data values in a cache and in particular accessing data values in an ā€˜nā€™ way set associative cache. A data processing apparatus is provided comprising an ā€˜nā€™ way set-associative cache, each cache way having a plurality of entries for storing a corresponding plurality of data values. A cache controller is provided which is operable on receipt of an access request for a data value to determine whether that data value is accessible within the cache, the cache comprising cache access logic operable under the control of the cache controller to determine whether a data value the subject of an access request is accessible in one of the cache ways. Also provided is a way lookup cache arranged to store an indication of the cache way in which a number of the plurality of data values stored in the cache are accessible. The cache controller is operable, when an access request for a data value specifies a non-sequential access, to reference the way lookup cache to determine whether that data value is identified in the way lookup cache and, if so, the cache controller being further operable to suppress the operation of the cache access logic and to cause that data value to be accessed. The provision of a way lookup cache enables the power consumption of the cache to be reduced by enabling the operation of the cache access logic to be suppressed.

Method of locating pipelines using RFID technology

A system is shown for locating hidden pipelines, particularly underground pipe used in a plastic pipeline such as for municipal water and sewer applications. An RFID tag is associated with the pipeline prior to installation of the pipeline into the ground. This can be done by associating the RFID tag with a sealing gasket which is subsequently installed at a sealing joint location of the pipeline. The tag can also be associated with the pipeline itself by installing the tag on a section of pipe. The location of the subsequently buried pipeline can be determined by interrogating the RFID tag with a suitable reader, the reader being located at an above ground location.

Hardware acceleration system for simulation of logic and memory

A hardware-accelerated simulator includes a storage memory and a program memory that are separately accessible by the simulation processor. The program memory stores instructions to be executed in order to simulate the chip. The storage memory is used to simulate the user memory. Since the program memory and storage memory are separately accessible by the simulation processor, the simulation of reads and writes to user memory does not block the transfer of instructions between the program memory and the simulation processor, thus increasing the speed of simulation. In one aspect, user memory addresses are mapped to storage memory addresses by adding a fixed, predetermined offset to the user memory address. Thus, no address translation is required at run-time.

Tamper evident shield assembly with tracking

A shield assembly for enclosing and restricting access to the port of a container including a tamper evident structure. A housing includes two segments movable between closed and opened orientations. A hollow interior of the housing, when in the closed orientation, substantially corresponds to the enclosed port. A lock assembly includes male and female members wherein a frangible structure interconnects the female member in engaging relation to the male member in a locked orientation. Passage of the male member through the female member from the locked position into an unlocked position results in detachment of the frangible structure and an enlargement of the female member sufficient to restrict the lock assembly from assuming the locked position. A tracking assembly is included and operative to identify and distinguish a plurality of shield assemblies and / or their components from one another.

Electric diagnostic tape measure and method

An electric diagnostic tape measure used to measure the electrical conduction of a peripheral nerve using a standard electrical nerve stimulator. The tape measure includes a flexible, elongated body with an active recording electrode mounted or attached to its distal end. Formed on the lower surface of the active recording electrode is a conductive, adhesive layer that temporarily holds the electrode on the patient's skin during a test. Located on the top surface of the elongated body is a distance-measuring index. During a test, the elongated body is aligned so that the end of the distance-measuring index is aligned and registered with the active recording electrode. By moving the nerve stimulator to different locations adjacent to the skin adjacent to the elongated body, the distance of the nerve being tested may be measured. In one embodiment, a wire extends through the elongated body.
