Method and apparatus for unloading ribbon rails from rail cars

A method and apparatus for unloading long ribbon rails which are carried on a transport car on bunks which hold the rails in four or five different tiers each containing eight to ten rails. A special railcar is equipped with a gantry crane which feeds the rails from the bunks into power driven thread boxes. The thread boxes grip the rails and feed them rearwardly onto the railway bed. After the first two rails have been unloaded side by side, the next pair are fed into the thread boxes. The thread boxes feed these rails out of the bunks as the train is moved forwardly at the same speed as the rails are fed rearwardly so that the rails are unloaded end to end with the first pair of rails. The railcar has retractable over the road wheels that allow it to be towed on the roadway to the site of the rail transport car.

Lab animal tracker and deterministic shocker

A deterministic shocker holds a test animal within an enclosure on a grid floor of electrodes such that a controller places a small current across each electrode and measures the electrical resistance of each electrode. The electrode with the lowest resistance strongly correlates to the location of a paw of the animal so that the controller delivers a small electric shock to only that electrode. Animal movement can be tracked and recorded during an experimental run. A second enclosure may be located adjacent the first enclosure separated by a transparent partition wherein the second enclosure also has a grid floor comprised of a plurality of electrodes, The controller also places a current across each of these electrodes and measures the electrical resistance thereof so that this animal's movement can also be tracked during the experiment to measure this second animal's response in witnessing the shocking of the first animal.

Device and Method for Adaptive Ultrasound Sensing

The adaptive system and method for ultrasound sensing comprises re-evaluating over time the detection threshold for predetermined sensing positions along the scanning direction to cope for the static target and environment changes at the sensing positions. The method includes comparing the measured echo value at each sensing position to a reference echo value corresponding to the same sensing position, and to iteratively determine a new reference value whenever the echo value is greater than the reference echo value and that the difference between the measured echo value and the reference echo value is lower than a detection assurance factor. The use of the adaptive ultrasound sensing system and method allows locating the sensor at different location without requiring a new calibration thereof, since the sensor learns the clutter dynamically and the detection thresholds are being built accordingly without being dependent on the environment in which the sensor is located.
