Methods and algorithms for cell enumeration in a low-cost cytometer

The enumeration of cells in fluids by flow cytometry is widely used across many disciplines such as assessment of leukocyte subsets in different bodily fluids or of bacterial contamination in environmental samples, food products and bodily fluids. For many applications the cost, size and complexity of the instruments prevents wider use, for example, CD4 analysis in HIV monitoring in resource-poor countries. The novel device, methods and algorithms disclosed herein largely overcome these limitations. Briefly, all cells in a biological sample are fluorescently labeled, but only the target cells are also magnetically labeled. In addition, non-magnetically labeled cells are imaged for viability in a modified slide configuration. The labeled sample, in a chamber or cuvet, is placed between two wedge-shaped magnets to selectively move the magnetically labeled cells to the observation surface of the cuvet. An LED illuminates the cells and a CCD camera captures the images of the fluorescent light emitted by the target cells. Image analysis performed with a novel algorithm provides a count of the cells on the surface that can be related to the target cell concentration of the original sample. The compact cytometer system provides a rugged, affordable and easy-to-use technique, which can be used in remote locations.

Fuel filter assembly

A fuel filter assembly that provides a constant level of least restricted fuel flow through the fuel filter assembly during the useful life of the filter media by utilizing the least possible amount of filter media to provide the least possible pressure differential over the filter media while also providing a constant level of fuel additive by exposing an amount proportional to the filter media required for the least possible restricted fuel flow. The fuel filter assembly utilizes a vertically upward housing that houses a filter media and a fuel additive. The fuel level slowly rises in the housing as the filter media becomes obstructed with contaminants and as the fuel additive dissolves over the life of the filter media. The top portion of the housing is made of a transparent material so that the level of fuel may be easily determined, thereby allowing for an accurate and simple assessment of the useful life of the filter media and the fuel additive. The housing also provides a multi-purpose aperture provided in the top of the housing to provide for removal and/or replacement of the fuel additive and venting and priming of the housing. The filter media and fuel additive are entirely fabricated from combustible materials so that both may be easily discarded without cost and environmental concerns.

System and method for billing in a professional services information management system

According to various example embodiments of the inventive subject matter there is disclosed method and apparatus for receiving a message from an electronic mail handling system wherein a message is received in an intellectual property management system, and automatically associating the message with a legal matter represented in the intellectual property management system. Further there is displayed a user selectable item with the message when it is displayed to a user, wherein selection of the item brings a user to a data entry screen that accepts a time entry, and further also where the time entry is automatically associated with the legal matter in which the message is associated. In addition, the system and method provides for organizing intellectual property data according to activities related to intellectual property, wherein each activity is represented by an activity data structure containing at least some data pertinent to the activity, and wherein the activity data structure associates legal billing data associated with the activity. The system and method also provides for adding a legal services billing entry to an activity data structure using a user selectable item displayed while data associated with the activity data structure is displayed to a user.
