The method comprises the following steps: for each private network address in an address pool used for load balancing, a bidirectional forwarding detection (BFD) packet is sent to a network device corresponding to the private network address; a response packet of each BFD packet sent by the network device is received; a state of the network device represented by each response packet received within a set time is confirmed; if the state represented by more than a first set number of response packets within the set time is an inactive state, it is confirmed that a link between a load balancing device and the network device is unavailable; and if the state represented by more than a second set number of response packets within the set time is an active state and the state represented by a third set number of recently received response packets is an active state, it is confirmed that the link between the load balancing device and the network device is available.
