Waveguides for performing spectroscopy with confined effective observation volumes

The present invention is directed to a method and an apparatus for analysis of an analyte. The method involves providing a zero-mode waveguide which includes a cladding surrounding a core where the cladding is configured to preclude propagation of electromagnetic energy of a frequency less than a cutoff frequency longitudinally through the core of the zero-mode waveguide. The analyte is positioned in the core of the zero-mode waveguide and is then subjected, in the core of the zero-mode waveguide, to activating electromagnetic radiation of a frequency less than the cut-off frequency under conditions effective to permit analysis of the analyte in an effective observation volume which is more compact than if the analysis were carried out in the absence of the zero-mode waveguide.

Non-combustible reinforced cementitious lightweight panels and metal frame system for shear walls

ActiveUS20060174572A1Heavy loadMaximization of building volumeSolid waste managementWallsMicrosphereVertical shear
A vertical shear wall system including vertical metal framing members, for example, C-joists, U-joists, open web joists, or other metal frame systems that support a reinforced, lightweight, dimensionally stable SCP panel. The shear wall system is non-combustible, water durable, mold and rot resistant, termite resistant and is capable of resisting shear loads equal to or exceeding shear loads provided by plywood or oriented strand board panels. The panels employ one or more layers of a continuous phase resulting from the curing of an aqueous mixture of inorganic binder, for example, calcium sulfate alpha hemihydrate, hydraulic cement, an active pozzolan and lime. The continuous phase is reinforced with glass fibers and contains lightweight filler particles, for example, ceramic microspheres.

Pharmaceutical dispensing system for medicament and pre-packaged medication

ActiveUS7853355B1Increased speed and collation and accuracy of dispensingMore peace of mind and quality timeDrug and medicationsCoin-freed apparatus detailsDrugDrug dispensing
This invention focuses on resolving outstanding problems of pharmaceutical dispensing systems. A need for dispensing of both medicaments and pre-packed medications has been addressed. This invention comprises an accurate counting system for multiple concurrently dispensed medicaments. Accurate, high speed medicament dispensing with little or no jam ups is achieved. Self recovery is provided to prevent medicament over counts. Machine self learn modes replace manual intervention by pharmacy personnel. Concurrent multi-tasking is provided and a quick action robotic arm further expedites the dispensing process. A touch screen computer is provided for coordinating the individual modules and overall control. The apparatus covers internal security and restricts access to unauthorized persons.

Vehicular driving support system and vehicular control system

A driving support system for a vehicle, which is provided with a communication apparatus capable of bi-directional communication between the vehicle and an unspecified number of moving objects, detects the presence of a communication impeding intersection at which there is a radio-wave blocking object using information obtained by communication with at least one of the moving objects that is traveling on an intersecting road which intersects the road on which the vehicle is traveling. The driving support system then transmits to at least one of the moving objects on the road on which the vehicle is traveling at least one of communication impeding intersection information relating to the communication impeding intersection and moving object information relating to at least one of the moving objects that is on the intersecting road only when the presence of the communication impeding intersection has been detected.

Dispensing system for returnable bulk containers

A dispensing system for returnable bulk shipping containers and more particularly to a apparatus and method for selectively emptying the contents of bulk containers which, when emptied, can be returned to the supplier for refilling. The apparatus comprises a hoist having vertical lift capability. A rotator provided on the hoist provides horizontal rotation capability to a container press. A funnel cap is provided with the container press which is configured to replace the cover of the container, thereby retaining any structural integrity afforded by the cover. The funnel cap includes a selectively operable valve. The funnel cap operates in conjunction with a platen which is used to initially support the container in its upright position. The funnel cap and platen are movable away from one another to enable containers to be inserted or removed therefrom. The funnel cap and platen are movable toward one another to enable a container to be engaged and retained therein. The funnel cap and platen exert sufficient force on the container such that during lift and rotation of the container, it will not fall out. Once inverted, the contents of the container will have been gravitationally fed into the funnel. The valve in the funnel may then be selectively operated to dispense discreet quantities of flowable material.

Accumulator with pickup tube

A suction accumulator for refrigeration or air-conditioning system use, especially for automotive air conditioning system use, which comprises a “pickup tube” to withdraw liquid from a reservoir of the accumulator to return oil to the compressor. The accumulator has a deflector with an outlet tube, to help ensure that fluid does not flow directly from the inlet opening to the outlet opening of the accumulator. The relatively narrow second portion of the outlet tube is closer to the outlet opening than the first portion. The pickup tube is secured in communication with the relatively narrow second portion and optimises the oil return function, minimises restriction to refrigerant flow, maximises effective and actual reservoir volume, and minimises the amount of liquid delivered to the compressor at switch-off. Incorporating an electric heating element or a heat exchanger for engine coolant or exhaust allows the accumulator of the present invention to function as the evaporator when the refrigeration system is used in heat pump mode for heating applications.
